Agnes Alice Hedger

On May 18, 2019 Alice Hedger, formerly of the Palisades and Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon, passed away at the Sherbrook Community Centre following a brief illness.

Alice—born June 20th 1920—was the daughter of Carl Berndt and Agnes Turn from the Elbow district of Saskatchewan. She completed her Grade 12 in the local schools and subsequently attended Normal School to become a teacher. In 1941 Alice began teaching school in the Invicta district of Saskatchewan where she met and married Harold Ernest Hedger—a farmer in the area on January 12th 1943.

After farming in the Invicta/Anerley Districts for several years, and the birth of their son Lawrence Wayne Hedger, the decision to move to Saskatoon was made. Alice and family first lived on 7th Street before a new house was built in the early 1950s at 1310 Colony Street just south of the university.

Alice was predeceased by her husband Ernie Hedger, her parents Carl and Agnes Berndt, and her brothers, Lawrence (Jean), Harold (Irene), and Elmer Berndt. Alice was also predeceased by all her brothers- and sister-in-laws from the Hedger family—Rowley (Violet) Hedger, Graham (Tina) Hedger, Arthur (Winnie) Mann, and Walter (Elva) Beattie.

Alice is survived by her son Wayne, sister-in-law Jean Berndt, and by numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews from the Berndt, Hedger, Beattie, and Mann families.

Besides Alice’s life-long interest in reading and learning she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star all her adult life. Alice was also master of “hand-work” of every type and description and she took an avid interest in her husband’s keen interest in rocks, gem stones, and finding indigenous artifacts.

At Alice’s request no funeral service will be held. Following cremation, a brief family Remembrance will be held in the future to commit the cremains in the Dinsmore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sherbrooke Community Centre would be appreciated.
