Albert Frederick Heeg

1927 — February 8, 2019

 Heeg, Albert

 March 5, 1927 – February 8, 2019

Albert Heeg, beloved father of Marty Heeg (Jane Bolstad) of Calgary ; Lorrie (Garnet) Greer of Saskatoon and Perry (Charlene) of Dalmeny passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019.   Albert also leaves six grandchildren who will cherish his memory: Mary - daughter of Marty; Carter (Janet) and April (Jason) - son and daughter of Lorrie and Garnet; Earl (Beth), Kealy (Jon), and Logan – son, daughter and son of Perry and Charlene.  Albert is also survived by his brother, Bob of Medicine Hat.   Albert was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy in 2013.  Albert was born on the farm near Estuary, Saskatchewan on March 5, 1927 to Gottfried and Mary.  He spent his youth enjoying farm life and baseball with his 3 brothers – Eddy, Herb and Bob.  Throughout the 1950s, with Albert at 1  st  base and batting cleanup, the Heeg brothers formed the nucleus of very strong Empress baseball team that won many tournaments.   On November 5, 1954, Albert and Dorothy were married.   They farmed near Leader until 1959, moved to Glidden for 3 years and then in 1962 Albert found the rich land he was looking for near Sovereign.   There they made their home and raised their family.  They were blessed with a great community and several bumper crops.   They were members of the United Church and had many good times at the local rink and community dances.  Albert was known on coffee row for his sense of humor and for his commitment to service with the Sovereign Lions Club.   He continued to enjoy sports, coaching baseball and taking many car loads of kids to hockey games and school events.   He truly loved the farm and spent countless hours taking care of his yard and helping Dorothy in the garden.   And of course, he also somehow found time for frequent games of catch.  In 1997, Albert and Dorothy moved to Saskatoon .  Albert transitioned from farming to retirement and this gave him even more time to devote to perhaps his greatest gift – which he had discovered in the 1980s, being a grandparent.  He truly shone in this part of life, attending sports and many other events, supporting his grandkids in all of their endeavors, but most of all having fun with them, telling stories, making jokes.  We will be forever grateful for his enduring commitment to family, loving kindness, modesty and strength.   We would like to extend our thanks to the staff at Hyde Park View where dad received loving and compassionate care over the last year.  The Celebration of Life will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home on Thursday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m. with Sue Panattoni as celebrant.  Lunch will follow at the Edwards Family Centre.
