The family of Jim Reid announce his passing on May 27, 2025, just shy of his 97th birthday. He was a good man who lived a good long life.
Jim was born June 8, 1928 on the farm in the Kelvin Grove district near Foam Lake, SK to Alexander James and Matilda (Beattie) Reid. He farmed for some time after high school when a stint as a school board trustee convinced him of the need for good teachers. Off he went as a mature student to "Normal" School for his teacher's certificate, followed by an B.A. and a B.Ed from U of S.
While Dad was teaching in Leroy, SK he met Jessie (Work) Coates and her daughters Margie and Norma. They married in 1963 and soon were a family of six with the addition of Susan and Rob. The family moved to Biggar, SK in 1965 where Dad worked first as a high school teacher and then in the School Board Office until his retirement in 1991. Dad and Mom moved into Saskatoon and had a busy retirement with clubs and volunteering until Mom's passing in 2004. Dad then started volunteering at the WDM where he got a kick out of introducing school groups to the one-room school house of his youth.
He was a long time active member of the Elfros Masonic Lodge No. 145 and Acacia Chapter 3 Order of Eastern Star.
Dad's final years were often spent in the company of friends at Smitty's and Bugsy's in Market Mall who treated "Grandpa Jim" like family. There was nothing he enjoyed more than a wee dram of Scotch and a good story.
Jim is survived by his sister Doreen Lister; his children Margie Kennedy and her family Tracy (Reid) Hansen, (Jessa, Janae and Malcom); Norma (Dave) McKee and their family, Mindy (Carlos) Castillo (Hailey, Monica and Ethan) and Rebecca McKee; Susan (David) Scarfe and their daughter Camryn; and Rob Reid; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. At 96 he was predeceased by many, notably his beloved wife Jessie, sons-in-law Bob McKee and Bill Kennedy, and brother-in-law Art Lister.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 2 at 1:00 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon.
In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice. Dad was a firm believer that even the smallest gift can make a big impact.
