In loving memory.
Alfred Glen Gjesdal, age 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at home surrounded by his wife and daughters following a brief illness from multiple organ failure. In his last days he looked forward to going home to be with his Heavenly Father.
Alfred was born at home on May 27, 1936, the fourth of eight children of Selma and Sigurd Gjesdal in Deer Ridge, SK. A day that still is the hottest on record for that day in the area. The family moved back to homestead northwest of Weldon. At the age of 16 he left home, started working, and ended up in Calgary for a while. At the age of 21 after visiting family in Weldon, as he was returning to Calgary, he felt God calling him back home to look after his mom and younger siblings on the farm after his dad left. Until the end, he was so thankful that he followed God's call on his life. This life changing experience defined dad as one who serves others and gave freely of his time and money to those around him. Dad was a faithful son who would check in with his mom daily and looked after her needs until her passing.
He married Amy Haugerud on July 26, 1969 in Melfort, SK. They lived in the Weldon area, raised their family, and actively farmed. They lost their son Marvin at the age of 6 as result of a heart defect since birth. Mom & Dad moved to Saskatoon in 1995 and retired from farming shortly after. At the age of 63, he went to SIAST and completed his GED grade 12 equivalency. In Saskatoon, he worked for Flexi-Coil and then a janitorial service officially retiring from work at the age of 80. In 2022 they sold their house to their daughter, Pam and moved into a condo at Circle Drive Place where they have enjoyed an active social life and made many new friends. Coffee time with friends and neighbours was something that he enjoyed both in Weldon and in Saskatoon.
In service to the Lord, he was actively involved with his church as board member, building maintenance, worship leader, bible study host and supporting missionaries. He faithfully volunteered in prison ministry in Prince Albert for many years with his cousin Irving Leland. He served on the Sask Housing board in Weldon. He was involved with the Melfort chapter of Full Gospel Ministries. He gave blood as often as he could with Canadian Blood Services for as long as he was qualified.
Alfred & Amy enjoyed their travels to Norway, Costa Rica, China, Cuba and the Maritimes. There were many camping trips with their children and memorable trips to Expo 86 and Disneyland.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Amy Gjesdal; two daughters, Pam Gjesdal & Valerie Braun; son-in-law, David Braun of Moose Jaw, Grandson Jordaan (Bailey) Braun of Moose Jaw, Granddaughter Chelsea (Dominik) Klassen of Winkler, MB, and Grandsons Nathan Braun and Noah Braun of Saskatoon. He is also survived by siblings Raymond (Marie) Gjesdal of Calgary, AB, Alice Bourcier of Parksville, BC, Eileen Borelli of Nanaimo, BC, Eldon (Marj) Gjesdal of Edmonton, AB, Bettie (Wayne) Tyndall of Davidson, Brother-in-law Earl (Lil) Haugerud of Wadena, and sister-in-law Frances Haugerud of Davidson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his son Marvin at age 6, his sweet mom Selma Gjesdal, his 'Pa' Sigurd Gjesdal, Sisters Helen Olsen and Mae Lima; Sister-in-law Vie Haugerud; Brothers-in-law Glen Haugerud, Gulfred Olsen, Fanuel Lima, Albert Bourcier and Carmen Borelli,
The family wishes to thank everyone who sent messages and visited during the last few months of Alfred's life. He was always thankful to have such a wonderful family, good friends and neighbours.
A special thanks to the Palliative Home Care team in Saskatoon who provided support to us so that we could fulfill Dad's final wishes of living at Pam's house until the end when he could go home to be with his Heavenly Father.
