Sister Alice Wagner, OSU (Prelate) entered eternal life on April 8, 2026 at St. Angela Merici Residence in Saskatoon. She was 94 years old. Daughter of Maximilian and Theresia (Fenrich) Wagner, she was born at Liebenthal, SK on November 22, 1931, the second of eight children and at her baptism was given the name Philomena. When she was aged three, her family moved to a farm near Wilkie where she attended Cottesloe School for her early education. Drawn to religious life, she went to St. Angela's Academy, Prelate, SK in 1949 for her Grade Ten. The following year she entered the Ursuline community, taking the name Sister Alice.

She made her First Profession on August 15, 1952, continued her studies and made her Perpetual Profession in 1955. Possessing gifts of resourcefulness and creativity, she served as home manager in Mendham, Liebenthal, Saskatoon, Cosine, Goodsoil, St. Walburg, Viscount and Tramping Lake followed by 13 years of community service at St. Angela's Convent and Academy at Prelate.

In 1974 Sister Alice answered a call to Swaziland where she worked with disabled adults at Ekulumeni, a rehabilitation centre at St. Joseph's Mission near Manzini. She returned to Canada in 1978 and engaged in pastoral ministry in Swift Current briefly when she was asked to care for a fellow Ursuline in Bethalgo, Illinois. The following year she was recalled to Swaziland to assist two Sisters who had been injured in a car accident.

In 1981 she joined the Brescia Centre at St. Angela Merici Residence where four Sisters made prayer their main apostolate, having their day revolve around the Hours of the Divine Office, daily Mass and several hours of private prayer. They sewed clothing for the Birthright organization, engaged in telephone ministry, and corresponded with a wide network of persons in need of spiritual and emotional support. As numerous prayer requests came their way, they formed a network of Apostolate members, many of whom joined them for a weekly Holy Hour. A talented artist, Sister Alice did calligraphy on certificates for the Knights of Columbus and St. Anne's Parish and spent many hours meticulously repairing statues for families and parishes in the diocese and beyond. She was a dedicated sacristan and avid gardener. She appreciated the experience of attending an Ursuline Convocation on Marie of the Incarnation held in Quebec City in 1983. In 1989 sixteen members of the Wagner family made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje and Rome. Sister Alice also found participation in local and diocesan pilgrimages to be spiritually enriching.

Always alert to the needs of others, she engaged in community service at St. Angela Merici Residence and helped to care for ailing Sisters there and at St. Joseph's Home. She is lovingly remembered by her Ursuline Sisters as a prayerful, gentle person and is appreciated for her generous, supportive and often hidden ministries.

Sister Alice was predeceased by her mother in 1984, her father in 1997, and her step-mother Leontina Bleier in 1990, her brothers Barnie, Peter and Raymond and brother-in-law, Wilfred Scherger. She will be dearly missed by her Ursuline Sisters, her sisters Betty Scherger, Anna (Sister Maxine) and Dolores (Thomas) Owens, her brother, Joseph (Beverly), her sisters-in-law, Helen, Carol and Ellen, many nieces and nephews and several step-sisters and step-brothers.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne's Church, 217 Lenore Drive, Saskatoon on April 20th at 1:30 pm. The Rite of Committal will take place at the Prelate Cemetery on April 21 at 11:30 am.
