Alvera was born on her grandfather's homestead in the Eigenfeld school district at Rosthern, SK. Here she took her elementary and partial high school. After her school years she learned the skills of farm life and home making. While taking a sewing class in Waldheim she met Elmer Bartel whom she married on October 10th, 1943. This marriage lasted sixty one years. As a newly married couple they proceeded in establishing a home and there their daughter Marilyn was born. These were very happy years, being involved in many aspects of community life, friendships were made that lasted a life time. Church played an important part of her life, choir, teaching Sunday school and ladies mission circle.

In 1956 Elmer, Alvera and Marilyn moved to Saskatoon. They purchased a revenue house and a large number of young people came to call it home while going to university or working at jobs. Here again church was an important part in their lives. In the fall of 1957, Alvera started work at the School for the Deaf, continuing for 27 years until her retirement. The deaf community and staff were a very special part of her life.

Elmer and Alvera enjoyed many holidays together, traveling on their own and on numerous bus tours. Alvera took great pleasure in her family spending many precious hours with her grand and great grand children. Alvera was an avid reader, enjoyed music, needlework and working on family trees which often brought unexpected results.

She was committed to her Lord and Savior, bringing before him daily, the spiritual and physical needs of her family.

Alvera was predeceased by her husband Elmer Bartel; her daughter, Marilyn (Allan) Jensen; her parents, John and Marie Fisher; brothers, Edwin in infancy, Norman (Helen) Fisher and Clarence (Helen) Fisher; sister, Ruth Fisher and nephew Robert Fisher.
