Anita Gail Freethy (nee Whittaker) passed peacefully from this life July 6th, 2025.
Gail was born on May 28th, 1936 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Fredrick Whittaker; nephew Neil Prime; sister-in-law Rena Zimmer (nee Freethy) and brother-in-law Carl Zimmer; and sister-in-law Mary Davidson (nee Freethy) and brother-in-law, Keith Davidson; sister-in-law Sheila Sullivan (nee Freethy); her brother, Gary Whittaker; and her husband, Alan Freethy. She is survived by her son, Glen Freethy (Christine, Manuelle, Sean, Renée); daughter Patricia Freethy (Michel Busque); sister Ruth (Donald) Prime; sister-in-law Elaine (Gary) Whittaker; and brother-in-law Neil (Shiela) Sullivan, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate in 1954 and went on to gain her teaching certificate at Saskatoon Teacher’s College in 1955. Here she met Alan Freethy for the first time but was too intent on her independence and career to get married just yet.
In 1970, she returned to studies at the University of Saskatchewan and earned her Bachelor of Education. She also met Alan again, and this time decided he was the one to share the next leg of her journey with. They got married, had two kids, bought a small farm beside a lake and, while they both continued teaching and coaching, made a life together.
While in college, Gail further pursued her passion for athletics, travelling across Saskatchewan playing basketball with the Adilman Aces.
Gail’s adventurous spirit brought her to communities across western Canada. Glenbush, Kamsack, Kenora, Winnipeg, Wilkie, and Rabbit Lake, where she made many lasting friendships. She underpinned extra-curricular and girl’s athletics programs everywhere she taught. Gail loved her students, often taking a personal interest, encouraging and supporting them individually.
She pursued a life-long love of drawing and painting, and gardening and growing things. She proudly supported Doctors Without Borders, The Council of Canadians, and the Stephen Lewis Foundation. In lieu of flowers, donations to the above organizations are greatly appreciated.
A service for Gail will be held Sunday, July 13, 2025 at 2 PM at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK.
