The Callbeck family announces the peaceful passing of Art (Arthur) Lorne Callbeck on Sunday September 1st, at his home in Saskatoon.
Art will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 61 years Janie; his daughters Sandi (Devin) Callbeck-Janzen and Lorna (John) Callbeck Cross of Saskatoon; son Kevin (Kenda) Callbeck of Calgary; grandchildren Cassie (Kyler) Josephson and Madison Josephson; sister Velma (Charlie) Morin, brother Richard (Dawn) Callbeck, and sister-in-law Rosemary Jarvie.
He was predeceased by his parents Esther Mary and William Elmer Callbeck; siblings Connie Crane, Ann Embryk, Claire (Barry) Milne, Ferne (Dave) Bannerman and Kathryn Callbeck; his brother-in-law Sandy Jarvie; and his son-in-law John Cross.
Art was born on the family farm near Turtleford Saskatchewan. He attended Warnock and Beaverbrook schools before moving into town and completing grades 11 and 12 at Turtleford High School. He took up farming in 1952, and met his future wife Janie Jarvie at a dance in 1962. They were married in 1963. Art and Janie slowly built the farm operation over the years. He was a hard worker, treating his friends and neighbors well and helping anyone who needed it.
In addition to farming both his father's, his brother's and hired hand's land alongside them, he and Janie owned and farmed 15 quarters of land when they retired in 1995 to move to Saskatoon to be closer to both their children and grandchildren.
Art participated in the local Turtleford and District Recreational Association by way of flipping pancakes at the annual fair, and even rode a float in the annual fair parade one year with several of his friends - all of them dressed as women! He was a member of the provincial Surface Rights board as secretary for a year and chair for another, feeling strongly that he needed to help ensure farmers rights were properly protected when oil wells were built on their lands.
Art was a builder, he loved and was very good at fixing almost anything and was an all-around handyman. When he retired, he spent quite a bit of time in his workshop at the acreage near Saskatoon, as well as helping out with building and fixing projects at all the kids houses. He and Janie spent countless days and hours planting and maintaining almost 100 spruce trees to develop their acreage. He was also a volunteer worker at Saskatoon City Hospital gift shop where Sandi worked.
He enjoyed visiting friends and family, doing sudoku, crosswords, telling stories and most of all, playing cards.
The most important part of Art's life was his family. Without a doubt, they were always first in his thoughts and at the center of his heart.
