It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Audrey Bernice McKibbon, age 100, at Preston Special Care Home in Saskatoon on November 10, 2025, with her loving daughter by her side. Audrey was born on April 29, 1925, in Calgary, Alberta to William and Florence Steel. She was the youngest of four siblings - two brothers: Cyril (Sid) and Gerry, and one sister, Joan.
She was born and grew up on New Street in Calgary in a wonderful neighbourhood, which is now known as Inglewood. One of her earliest memories was when she was a flower girl at the age of 3. She remembered going to the dressmaker to get fitted for her dress and bonnet. Audrey's granny lived with the family, and Audrey fondly remembered large gatherings for Sunday dinners and festive occasions.
Audrey's family moved to the Rockcliffe area of Calgary (adjacent to Sandy Beach today) when she was 10 years old. Because there was no public transportation to that area of the city at the time, Audrey walked home from school every day, even in the cold, snowy Calgary winters. It took her one hour to walk home. The Rockcliffe days provided many happy memories. The large home was host to many military fellows during the war. They were entertained with dances, parties, and dinners.
On November 10, 1948, Audrey married George (Kib) McKibbon, who worked for Scott National. They were transferred to several cities - Winnipeg, Lethbridge and Edmonton - before settling in Saskatoon in 1966.
Audrey was an amazing mother and constantly showed us how much she loved us with her time, effort, and creativity. There were the hand-made Halloween costumes and doll clothes, the stuffed Winnie-The-Pooh characters, the theme birthday parties with special cakes, the puppet theatre created from a wardrobe box, so we could entertain the neighbourhood kids, the delicious Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas dinners, and so much more.
Not only was family extremely important to Audrey, she also cherished her many friends and neighbours.
Over the years, Audrey had numerous interests including homemaking, gardening, listening to music, bowling, fitness classes, birdwatching, and oil painting. She was very active at St. James Anglican Church, and was a member of the Sue Kelsey Circle for 35 years. She did volunteer work for Sherbrooke Nursing Home, Meals on Wheels, and others.
Audrey and Kib had many happy times in their 52 years of marriage and enjoyed their home in Greystone Heights. They were members of the Saskatoon Fieldhouse for many years, and enjoyed travelling to Barbados, Hawaii, Palm Springs, San Diego, Tampa, San Antonio, and Galveston.
After Kib passed away in 2001, Audrey took some wonderful trips to New Orleans, Cuba, and Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, Audrey was able to visit with cousins whom she had never met. It was a trip of a lifetime!
Audrey is survived by her son Dana (Julia) and daughter Lauren (Brad), several caring nieces and their families, as well as other family members. She was predeceased by her husband Kib, her parents, and her siblings.
Audrey lived independently in her own condo until the age of 90. We would like to extend our thanks to the kind and caring staff at Preston Park 1, Warm 'n' Cozy Care Home (Esteem), and especially to Preston Special Care Home for their loving and compassionate care of Audrey for the past 5 years.
Audrey was a kind, gentle, loving soul and we will miss her dearly.
Cremation has taken place. A family gathering and interment will occur in Victoria, B.C. in the spring.
Donations in Audrey's memory may be made to the CNIB, Saskatoon SPCA, Alzheimer's Society or Preston Special Care Home.
