It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ellen Zimmer (nee Wilson) which occurred on February 4, 2025 surrounded by family at home on the acreage. The beloved matriarch of our family, Barbara, age 80 was our mother, grandmother and best friend. She is lovingly remembered by her three sons, J. Christopher, Michael A. (Amanda), and J. Andrew (Megan) and her three adored grandchildren, Silas, Laurel and Asher. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, J. Wayne, her parents, Mary Ellen Wilson (nee Fox) and Victor Wilson III, her father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Josephine Zimmer, and brother-in-law, Rod Zimmer.
Mom was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1944. She was an only child and was raised in the "rock house" by her mother, aunts, and uncles in Fredericktown, MO. Her early schooling was in Fredericktown and Farmington. She then went on to complete a bachelor's degree from Fontbonne College in St. Louis, and a Master of Library Sciences from Columbia University in New York City.
While attending graduate school, she met her husband Wayne. After marrying in 1968, she came North to begin her life and career in Saskatoon. She dedicated her career to libraries, literacy and education, as well as spending many years working in government to advocate for women's rights. She was a devoted and extremely passionate teacher of Library Technicians at SIAST. She was equally proud to be a founding member of Allegro Montessori School.
Her hobbies included reading, walking, travelling, volunteering, being active in her church, and enjoying the arts such as theatre and music. She was tenacious, loving, and had progressive ideals. Mom opened her heart and home to everyone. She loved spending time with family, and frequently hosted friends at the acreage. Throughout her life, her family came first. She spent endless hours supporting her children in their sports and activities, and in later years looked forward to babysitting her grandchildren, reading and singing with them, and taking them to the library and park.
Please join the family in celebrating her life. A Prayer Vigil is planned for Thursday, February 13 at 7 p.m. and Funeral Mass on Friday, February 14 at 2 p.m., both at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Pl). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saskatoon Public Library or Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. For those unable to attend in person, the Funeral Mass will be livestreamed at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com where condolences and memories can also be shared with the family. Arrangements in care of Saskatoon Funeral Home 306-244-5577.
