Barry Leigh Bates

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barry Bates, who passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at the age of 91.

Barry was predeceased by his mother and father, as well as his brothers. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Louise, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Bobbi Bates, Dani Bates, and Nicki Bates, and by his grandsons, Brady Lachapelle and Carter Lachapelle, who brought him immense pride and joy.

Barry believed life was meant to be enjoyed, and he certainly lived it that way. An avid golfer, he could often be found on the golf course enjoying the game he loved. His happy place was the family cabin at Candle Lake, where countless summers were spent making memories with family and friends. When winter arrived, Barry and Louise looked forward to escaping to the warmth of Arizona, creating lasting friendships and enjoying the sunshine together.

Those who knew Barry will know of his Friday evening custom—a drink or two of Lemon Hart rum to mark the end of another week well lived – everyone who passed through the doors was strongly encouraged to join. Throughout his life, Barry built many lasting friendships through his work, his love of golf, and the communities he and Louise were part of. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his sense of humour, his kindness, and his ability to make people feel welcome. Whether spending time with family, enjoying the lake, traveling, or sharing stories with friends, Barry embraced every opportunity to create memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Barry lived a full and rewarding life, rich with love, friendship, adventure, and laughter. While his family mourns his passing, they find comfort in the many wonderful memories he leaves behind and in knowing he lived life to the fullest. 

He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten. 

His final wishes did not include a funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.
