Barry Harman of Saskatoon, SK, passed away peacefully at his home on September 30th. He was 85.
Born in Prince Albert, Barry spent much of his early years visiting his grandparents' farm nearby. At age 6, his family moved to Melfort, SK. A gifted athlete and scholar, Barry excelled in track and field, football and hockey. His family moved to Saskatoon prior to his senior year in high school where Barry continued to excel in athletics and academics. He went on to earn degrees in Science and Education from the University of Saskatchewan.
Barry dedicated over 30 years to teaching sciences and mathematics at Hanley High School where he was known for his hands-on approach in the lab and his commitment to student success. He also coached football, helping to lead his teams to four provincial championships. Hanley grads recall Barry's entertaining and heartfelt "toast to the grads" at many graduation ceremonies.
After retiring from teaching, Barry worked alongside his wife Nancy at their pharmacy, The Medicine Shoppe in downtown Saskatoon, where he helped manage operations and support the business. In his spare time, he undertook and completed many impressive home projects at their homes in Saskatoon and at Blackstrap Lake.
In his 50's, Barry rediscovered his passion for golf. He introduced Nancy to the game and immensely enjoyed his time on the links playing with family and friends. He continued to play the game at a high level well into his 80's.
In 2007, Nancy also retired and the two of them embarked on many adventures in their RV and places further abroad. In 2010, they purchased a condominium unit in Phoenix, AZ where they spent most of the winter months.
In recent years, Barry took pride in the fact that he continued to "pump iron" at age 85 several times a week. He very much enjoyed the time spent with his "crew" at Luther Riverside Terrace playing pool or participating in other activities.
In the time following Nancy's death in 2016, Barry's grief was eased thanks to the strong friendships he enjoyed with Dan and Gina, Bob and Liz, as well as other friends in Saskatchewan. The time he spent with his grandson, Mason, his family in Florida, as well as family members that visited him from Alberta truly helped him endure his loneliness.
Above all, Barry was devoted to his family. He was known to say that the only thing he truly wanted in life was Nancy. Their love story began in 1962 and blossomed into a lifelong partnership filled with joy, adventure, and unwavering support. Together, they raised three sons: Kevin, Michael, and Bryn-each of whom Barry was undeniably proud.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Maisie Harman and his wife of 53 years, Nancy.
Barry is survived by three sons: Kevin (Stacey) of Englewood, FL; Michael (Bonita) of Saskatoon, SK; and Bryn (Susan) of Ocean Park, WA. He is also survived by his sister, Gayle of Calgary, AB and his brother, Jay (Jane) of Calgary, AB. Also left to treasure his memory are five grandchildren: Tuesday, Zoe (Josh), Mason, Grace and Blake, as well as 1 great granddaughter, Eden. He also leaves nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends; all of whom will miss him dearly.
The family wishes to express their profound gratitude for the dedication and love that Gina Rayburn and her family showed towards Barry in his time following the loss of Nancy.
A Celebration of Barry's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2025, at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 10 Grosvenor Crescent, Saskatoon, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.
