On July 10, 2025, with his family by his side, Byron McCrimmon passed away peacefully at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. He was 87.
Byron was a family man, a farmer, a hockey player and a friend. He was born on February 16, 1938 to Angus and Eva. He grew up in Plenty, Saskatchewan where his parents worked as grain buyers before establishing their family farm.
In 1955 , while a patient at the Dodsland Hospital, Byron met and fell in love with his nurse at the time, Faye Nicholson. They were married in 1958 and spent 67 years together. They lived and farmed in Plenty for 40 years. Following his retirement from farming, he and Faye moved to High River where they spent 20 years enjoying countless rounds of golf and made many lifelong friends. In addition to their time in High River they spent 37 winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona, needless to say golf remained a huge part of their life down south. They later moved to Saskatoon where he spent the last ten years of his life.
In addition to golf, Byron loved hockey, a quality that was later passed down to his sons. He played for the Rosetown Red Wings for ten years where he saw plenty of success on the ice and formed friendships that last to this day. When he retired from playing he still loved to watch hockey and, in particular, any team that his sons Brad or Kelly were involved with. Two highlights in his life were getting to watch his son Brad win a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames and then 34 years later see his younger son Kelly win the Stanley Cup as the General Manager of the Vegas Golden Knights. During the fall months Byron loved to watch his beloved Roughriders, which would often necessitate the use of several televisions so he could keep track of both the hockey and football scores at once.
He and Faye enjoyed a life rich with friends and family. They were fortunate to spend lots of time travelling, be it a cruise, a golf trip, summering at their cabin in Cochin, or a trip across the globe. For ten years Byron hosted the McCrimmon Invitational, an annual golf trip at the Piccadilly Inn in Radium, B.C. where many memories were made.
Byron is survived by his wife Faye, son Kelly (Terry), daughter-in-law Maureen, grandchildren, Chelsea (Landon), Micky (Kelly), Carlin (Adam), Liam, and great grandson, McCoy, as well as his nephew Lindsay Parsons (Ilena), and sister-in-law Jean Ostertag and family.
Byron was predeceased by his parents Angus and Eva, his sister Bev and his son Brad.
A celebration of life was held for Byron at The Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon on July 15, 2025.
