October 15, 1948 - October 25, 2025

David Katz was a man of science with the soul of an artist - equal parts curiosity, creativity and compassion. He met his recent cancer diagnosis and treatment with grace and courage. His heart took its final beat with his family by his side.

David was born, raised, educated and lived most of his life in Saskatoon. Technology intrigued him and he was awarded both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan. Always keen on learning, in his retirement years, he completed a U of S Certificate program in Applied & Professional Ethics.

David was a partner in opening Saskatchewan's first micro computer store in 1977. He served as IT Manager at Develcon Electronics and then moved into the Saskatchewan Public Service with Science & Technology, Economic Development, and Innovation Saskatchewan. He was especially proud of the role he played in the development of the Fedoruk Centre and its production of isotopes for medical imaging.

His interests were varied: home improvement projects, bonsai gardening, fused glass, and all things aeronautical. However, his most enduring passion was food and cooking. His culinary skills were legendary. His knowledge of the science of cooking, his artistic approach to food prep and presentation, and his Kitchen Savvy website made him a valued resource for other aspiring cooks.

David loved to explore the art, food, and cultures of the world. He believed every trip across the Atlantic must include a stop in Paris, and that cruising any ocean in the world was time well spent.

David described his family as the greatest joy of his life. He was a bright light, wise counselor, and rock of stability in our world and in the lives of friends and colleagues as well.

He leaves behind: his loving wife, Patricia Katz; daughters Tristan (Marc Bennett) Katz and Lindsay Katz; grandsons Ethan Messina, Leon and Oliver Bennett; brothers Sylvan (Jennifer) Katz and Zender (Jane) Katz; and an extended family of in laws including Ruth Thoen, Pat's five sisters and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Georgina Katz, his sister, Faye Katz, and father-in-law, Norman Thoen.

We are grateful to the Saskatoon Cancer Center and St Paul's Palliative Care Unit for their care and support through this challenging time.

Memorial donations in memory of David may be made to the Meewasin Valley Authority or Saskatoon Community Foundation.

A Memorial Service will take place on Friday, November 7, 2025 at 1:30 pm at Saskatoon Funeral Home followed by a reception at the Edwards Family Centre prior to interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.
