It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Malcolm Lockerbie—husband, dad, grandpa, friend and colleague. A renowned educator and leader in the community, David made many contributions to both the community and his family who miss him greatly.
David was born in Wilkie, SK. He spent his formative years in Scott and Viscount, and then Vanscoy, where he completed Grade 12. David's teaching career began in Guernsey, SK, followed by a number of elementary administrative positions with the Saskatoon Board of Education. Throughout his teaching career, he enriched the lives of countless people. He will be remembered for his great rapport with students, staff and parents. Always interested in learning, he attained his Masters of Education at the University of Saskatchewan.
In 1958 David married Orla (nee Minish) and they raised four children. Their home was always full of music and various activities. They enjoyed camping, fishing, touring and skiing. A highlight for David and family was a 2-year teaching assignment with the Department of National Defence in Lahr, West Germany from 1973-75. During this time, the family travelled extensively throughout Europe and skied its many slopes. On their return, they spent many summers at Big Shell Lake, where they built a cabin and enjoyed lake life. Upon retiring in 1987, David and Orla spent many enjoyable winters in Mesa, AZ exploring the countryside and enjoying many snowbird activities. Most importantly, David loved spending time with Orla.
David was president of the Saskatoon Men’s Teachers' Association, the Saskatoon Public School Principals' Association, and the International Reading Association (Saskatoon); he also acted as Worshipful Master of Goose Lake Masonic Lodge. Coming from a very musical family, he was an early member of the local Men's Barbershop Society, and was a long-time member of “The Outcasts” fiddle group. He sang in church choirs and was a committed member of the United Church. Other interests included dancing, skiing, golf, tennis, fishing, hunting, and entertaining family and friends. He enjoyed many lasting friendships—particularly with his fishing buddies and his penny-ante poker friends.
David was very proud of the academic, musical and athletic accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and was always an avid supporter.
Left to mourn David are his daughter Marina (Bryce) Barrie, their children Scott (Jasmine) and Kristen (Alex), eldest son Cameron, son Michael (Betty), their sons Sean (Rebecca) and Daniel (Nevaeh), son Ian (Jill), their daughters Naomi and Farah, sister Shirley Smith, sister-in-law Theresa Minish, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Orla Lockerbie, parents David S. and Dorothy Lockerbie, brothers-in-law Don Smith, John Minish, Bill Minish, Robert Minish, Fred Minish, Bill Smith, Syd Allen, Willis Stevens, Carl Shappert, sisters-in-law Marion Smith, Keitha Allen, Vera Stevens, Viola Minish, Ruth Minish, Gladys Minish, Shirley Shappert, Faye Minish and Pauline Minish.
Celebration of Life will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home at 2:00 pm, on Saturday May 30th, 2026 followed by a reception at the Edwards Family Centre and then interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace-Westminster United Church (Saskatoon) or a charity of choice.
