With great sadness, the family of Debra May McCarty Stefanuk announces her peaceful passing in the early afternoon of December 23, 2025 at Glengarda Hospice in Saskatoon with her husband, Bill and their two sons, Sean and Josh at her bedside.
Deb, as she liked to be called, was born July 23, 1958 in Biggar, Saskatchewan. She was the oldest of four children (Carson, Laura, and Audrey) raised by Bill and Dorothy McCarty.
Deb moved to Saskatoon after graduating high school in 1976. Once there she attended Saskatoon Business College. After graduating she went to work for the City of Saskatoon. She started at CPIC. From there, she transferred to Saskatoon Prosecution, working as the assistant to Ben Wolf, the head prosecutor at that time, before becoming a provincial court clerk.
She married Bill Stefanuk July 10, 1982 and they started their family in 1986. In 1988 she quit her job to raise her children. She was heavily involved with the school board. She believed that raising her children was her greatest achievement. She put them before anything or anyone else.
In the mid 2000's she worked at and eventually became the manager of a local quilt store in Saskatoon for almost five years. Through the store and the Quilt Guild she met dozens of people who became very close, very dear friends. She cherished the friendships she cultivated.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Bill, sons Sean and Josh, grandchildren Kacee and Grayson, Bill's sister Shannon and her sons Michael (Melissa) child (Milo), Owen, Ryan (Rebecca), brother Robert, sister Joanne and her family, Jody, Eric and Stacey.
Deb will be fondly remembered by her siblings Carson (Cindy) and family Allie (Justin) children (Avery, Emily), Kaila (Jim) children (Tucker, Olive, Troy); Laura (Boyd) Suter and family Lyndsey (Wade) children (Bennett, Ema), Draiton (Carla), Jared (Hayley) children (Rowen, Miles); Audrey (Leon) Ochs and family Morgan, Lisa (Chris) child (Declan), Derek (Crystal), Kate (Cody).
Bill, Sean and Josh would like to thank her good friend Judy McCroskey and her daughter Melissa Tomlins for the compassion and support they provided to Deb in her final days. It meant the world to us.
They would also like to thank her sister, Laura, for all the days she spent at Glengarda caring for her older sister. I am sure that Deb could feel the love of all those who were there during her final days.
Bill, Sean and Josh would also like to thank all the staff at Glengarda Hospice in Saskatoon. It was through their care and compassion that Deb's final days were in peace. Please go to their website and make a donation.
Deb has had her heart touched by all those who loved her and she touched the hearts of all those she loved. She will be forever missed. She can never be replaced. I am sure she is in a peaceful space now, looking down on all of us, trying to remember where she put her seam ripper.
Goodbye until we meet again.
