Doreen Louise Haaland, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on December 14, 1931, in Saskatoon, SK, Doreen lived a life marked by compassion and a love for her community.
Doreen is pre-deceased by her parents Jean and Eric Westbrook, siblings Gerald (Vicki) Westbrook of Houston, Texas, and Betty (Don) Douglas of Kingston, Ontario.
After graduating from Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, Doreen pursued her passion for helping others by entering the field of nursing. She graduated from the Saskatoon City Hospital nursing program in 1953 and the University of Saskatchewan in 1958, earning a BSc in Nursing. Her career took her to Sarnia, Ontario, before she returned to Saskatoon, to work as an instructor of the Diploma Nursing program at Kelsey Institute and later teaching first aid at Kelsey/SIAST - all while raising a family.
Doreen was a proud parishioner of St. James (Emmanuel) Anglican Church for much of her life. She also found joy in a variety of interests. A highlight of her golfing days was scoring a hole-in-one at Wildwood in 1998. Her love for tennis was shared with her life-long friends Mary, Sharon, and Pauline at Riverside, and her passion for the arts was evident in her unwavering support for the Saskatoon Symphony and the local arts scene. Doreen also delighted in organizing and attending nursing and school reunions over the years, always looking forward to reconnecting with friends.
Together with her husband Harold, Doreen enjoyed being part of numerous bridge clubs, where they formed lasting friendships and shared countless laughs. Doreen's love for the outdoors was evident in her lifelong enjoyment of camping, with many great experiences at Wakaw Lake.
Doreen's legacy is carried on by Harold; her children, Judith (Robert) Barkman and Eric (Daylin) Haaland; her grandchildren Noah, Thomas, Eva, Georgia, and Liam - all of whom she greatly adored; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her loving and feisty personality and the strength of her character.
Special thanks to all the staff and management at Preston Park 1, and more recently Preston Special care home, especially "Loretta" for the compassionate care provided during Doreen's later years. Your kindness is deeply appreciated.
