The family of Edward Burton Stephens announces his passing on July 7, 2026 at the age of 86. Ed was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on August 31, 1939 to Canadian parents, Edward and Edith Stephens. When he was 10, the family moved back to Portage la Prairie, MB. Ed was active in Cub Scouts, sports and track & field, PCI Student Council, and social events (the male CanCan group was legendary).
In 1958, Ed joined the RCMP and trained at Depot Division in Regina, SK for a year (when they still had horses). After staying on as a swimming instructor for a short time, he was stationed in Meadow Lake, Radisson, North Battleford, Rosetown, Lloydminster and Bengough, SK. In 1977 he returned to Depot as an instructor, in charge of the Human Relations Unit until his retirement in 1981. During this time, he attended night classes at the U of R and earned a Certificate in Personnel Admin.
In the fall of 1981, Ed started law school at the U of S. Graduating in 1984, he practiced law in Saskatoon and Prince Albert, and was a Senior Crown Prosecutor for Northern SK in La Ronge. He retired in 2014 at the age of 75.
Ed was an avid reader and had many interests and hobbies. Over the years he enjoyed hunting and fishing, hockey, swimming, curling, cross country skiing and golf. He cheered for the New York Rangers, the Riders and the Blue Jays. He collected stamps and coins, with philately becoming his primary hobby upon retirement. He was a Mason, a Kinsmen, and a member of the Anglican church. Ed was a great dancer, loved music, sang in several choirs, such as the Chimo Chordsmen and Men of the Way, and played a mean pair of spoons. He loved dogs and they loved him. Through his brother, Ric, he developed a passion for sailing. He had a log cabin at Candle Lake and spent many happy hours on his sailboat. Ed was grateful for the support of AA and the wonderful friendships made there.
While in RCMP training, Ed fell in love with Phyllis Green, who was in nursing training at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital. They married in 1961 and had two children: Andrea (Garry Holmes) and Richard (Clarisa Morales). Ed and Phyl were devoted grandparents to Tyler Stephens (Sydney Constantinoff), Tanis Stephens (Gin Engel), Jesse Holmes and Carmen Holmes (Arjun Villanueva). Ed was thrilled to become a great grandpa to Luther Villanueva in March 2026.
We lost Phyllis to cancer in 2016, and in 2019 Ed married Edie (Grobb) Huffman. They lived in Calgary until moving to Saskatoon in 2021. Sadly, Edie passed away in March 2026.
Ed was affectionate, generous, impulsive, fun loving, and terrible with money. He treasured his family, and will be fondly remembered. Ed is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandson; his brother, Ricardo; Phyllis' sister, Marjorie Lothian; Edie's sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jean and Bill Vermue; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on July 15th at 1:30pm at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (10 Grosvenor Cres, Saskatoon, SK).
