Elizabeth Eugenie BECKETT (née Lepine) passed away peacefully in her Saskatoon home November 10, 2023, at the age of 88. Survived by children Mary Felice Beckett (David Kaufman) and Thomas Alexander Beckett; and her grandchildren Amanda Kaufman Lavelle (Chris), Rebecca Kaufman (Scott), Caroline Kaufman (JP), Benjamin Kaufman, Melissa Beckett and Megan Beckett; and her great-grandchildren Rowan Lavelle, Gavin Lavelle, Alden Lavelle and Braxton Lavelle. Pre-deceased by her father Albert Oscar Lepine and her mother Sylvia Mary Lepine (née Macready) and her daughter Patricia Ann Beckett. Elizabeth was born in Saskatoon and attended school at the Sisters of Sion School, St Pauls School and City Park Collegiate all in Saskatoon before completing a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with Honours at the University of Saskatchewan where she was assistant to Dr. Thorvaldson who was Dean of Engineering at the time. She was the first woman to graduate from that college and on the 50th anniversary of her graduating class was able to participate in the ring ceremony for her granddaughter who was graduating that year. Elizabeth joined the Mines Branch in Ottawa as a Lab Manager after graduation. After returning to Saskatchewan, she married Thomas Beckett and became an active farmer. In addition, she was a long-time teacher at Robertson’s Secretarial School, owned by her mother Sylvia Lepine, where she was an influence over many young people starting their careers in business and government. Elizabeth was an active supporter of women’s issues and politics through her engagement with the University Women’s Club, the Saskatoon Council of Women, the Provincial Council of Women and the National Council of Women, where she served in various executive roles over the years. In addition, she supported the alumni groups for her college and schools by participating in and planning reunions for both City Park Collegiate and the College of Engineering, Chemical Engineers.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Saskatoon Funeral Home. Donations in lieu of flowers are may be made in memory of Elizabeth to the Parkinson Canada.
