Elizabeth (Betty) Stewart
March 11, 1925 - January 30, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on January 30th of 2023 of our beloved mother, Elizabeth Stewart, at the age of 97. Elizabeth was born on March 11th, 1925 in Birmingham, England to Henry and Violet Caulkett. She was the oldest of 3 children. As an adult in England, Elizabeth worked at a few interesting jobs. During WWII, she did clerical work for the Ministry of Food which organized wartime food rationing in Britain. Later she did clerical work at the Birmingham Accident Hospital and then at Birmingham’s Winson Green Prison. In 1966, Elizabeth and her husband, Walter Williams, and son, Malcolm, emigrated to Canada and lived in Biggar, SK. for a few years. They then moved to Saskatoon where Walter was employed with the Saskatoon Public School Board. Elizabeth started work at the University of Saskatchewan, first in the Student Admissions department and later in Purchasing. She worked there until she retired at the age of 66. Walter passed away in 1972. In 1978, Elizabeth met and married Robert Stewart. They had 20 good years together, until Robert passed away in 1998. Robert had 3 grown children whom Elizabeth treated as her own. Her life was enriched by these new additions to her family. Throughout her life, Elizabeth was always surrounded by pets...dogs, cats, and birds. She doted on these and spent many hours taking care of them. She liked to buy and sell houses. Since arriving in Canada in 1966, she has bought and sold close to a dozen houses. In each one, she would put considerable effort into yardwork, planting trees, shrubs and flowerbeds. She was a very sociable person and enjoyed many longtime friendships in both Canada and England. She loved visiting and chatting and she always maintained her sense of humour. Elizabeth was predeceased by her Mom and Dad, Henry and Violet Caulkett; by a baby sister, Jeannette; by her younger sister, Eileen and brother-in-law, Chas Newman; and by her younger brother, Maurice Caulkett and sister-in-law Rose Caulkett. Left to treasure her memory are her son, Malcolm (RoseAnne) Thorpe; her stepsons, Bob Jr. (Muriel) Stewart and Bruce (Debra) Stewart; stepdaughter, Barb (Jim Harrigan); nieces and nephews, Maria (Leonard Wourms), Kevin (Tamiko) Caulkett, Pauline (Robert Sibbald), Nigel (Joan) Caulkett and Seán Caulkett; 7 grandchildren, and several grandnieces, grandnephews and great grandchildren. We would like to thank the staff of St. Ann’s Home for their loving care of Mom these last 8 years. Elizabeth’s Funeral will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 228 - 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK. at 10:30 a.m. on February 22nd, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
