Florence "Flo" Mawson (nee Hancheroff) passed away on September 24th, 2024 at Circle Drive Special Care Home. Flo was 89 years old and had been living in the care home for 11 years. She was fortunate to have had good quality of life right up until close to her passing. Flo will be sadly missed by her daughter Janice Coates and son in law Murray Coates, and her 2 grandchildren Emily Coates (Daniel McCullough) and Ollie Coates (Robbie Hynes). She is predeceased by her daughter Kim Mawson in 1990, and husband Jack Mawson in 1998.
Flo was born in Kamsack Saskatchewan in 1935. She moved to Saskatoon in her late teens to attend Saskatoon Business College to become a secretary. It was there that she met and fell in love with her husband Jack. She and Jack were married in 1956 and had their two daughters. The family moved to a few different cities across Canada as Jack worked for the federal civil service. Flo was a "working mom" holding down office jobs by day and still sewing our clothes, making homemade meals, and keeping the home. In addition to this Flo had many hobbies throughout her lifetime. She was an artist who started painting in oils and later moved to watercolours, she had a ceramics period, and was active in Toastmasters for many years.
Flo and Jack loved to travel and went to Europe many times visiting England, Ireland, Scotland and Holland. Flo continued to travel after Jack passed joining in on many painting holidays to Europe and Eastern Canada. Flo also travelled twice to Russia to explore her Doukhobor roots. Her last vacation was a cherished painting holiday taken by Flo and Janice together to Venice with a cruise around the Mediterranean to follow.
As Flo's physical health began to worsen, Flo moved from the family home to a condo and a few years later, to the Long Term Care Home. Flo was resilient, making the best of her changing circumstances and finding fun and happiness at every stage of life. At the home she was an active participant in all of the recreation activities and a strong voice on the Resident Counsel. She loved to go to Janice and Murray's every week for dinner and later when she was wheelchair bound, enjoyed outings to their yard and gazebo in the summers and occasional restaurant outings to her favorite restaurant Mano's.
Flo will be sadly missed by her family, her "second daughter" Claudette Gagnon, and her friends at the home and beyond. Safe travels mama.
