Frank Scott

Frank Scott was born in Ryton, Northumberland to Annie (nee Palmer) and Archie Scott. He took his early schooling in Ryton, continuing at the University of Durham to obtain his medical degree. Following more clinical training, Frank became the medical officer to the Brigade of Gurkhas training depot in Sangi Patani Malaya for three years. He then spent two years in Lagos, Nigeria, before settling permanently in Canada, starting in Loon Lake, SK, where he served the community for years before moving finally to Saskatoon. Throughout his time in Saskatchewan, Frank was active in Public Health and the Saskatchewan Medical Association as a Representative Assembly member and Board member. He was also the longest serving board member of the Saskatchewan Lung Association. Upon his retirement he was honored with Life Membership of the Canadian Medical Association. 

From an early age he was fascinated by natural history, a hobby he could indulge fully during his time in Loon Lake, particularly when hosting the annual Osprey bird count and Barbecue at the Scotts’ cabin. He and his wife Penny were keen private pilots: he took part in the Great Burlington Float Plane race in 1973, and together, they flew widely in the prairies and as far north as Bathurst Inlet, NWT and as far south as Florida. Frank loved introducing young people to flying and gave many children their first plane ride, some of whom went on to get their own pilot’s licences. 

Frank was unceasingly generous to family, friends, and to the causes he supported, including the Gurkha Welfare Trust and the Lung Association. In 2005, his contributions to the community were honoured by the Lieutenant Governor with the Saskatchewan Centennial medal. He was also awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers by the Governor General in 2012. 

He is survived by his wife, Penny; their son, Paul; daughter-in-law, Marcela; and adored granddaughter, Ana Sophia. They would like to thank all the palliative and home care nurses who helped make his final days as comfortable as possible.
