Garry Romuldietz

July 18, 1948 — April 17, 2025

Garry Henry Romuldietz died April 17, 2025 in Saskatoon, SK where he spent his adult life. Born in Melville, SK in 1948, he moved to Saskatoon in 1966 to attend the University of Saskatchewan where he studied Geophysics. He worked briefly in that field in northern Manitoba, but, amidst the diverse bug life there, was soon bitten by the travel bug. He hitch-hiked to New York, took an Icelandic Airways flight to Copenhagen and spent the winter exploring Europe. On his return to Saskatoon, he studied Philosophy and Far Eastern Studies while also working on campus. There he met his future wife Cinda Romuld. They married on Friday July 13 in a Unitarian Fellowship ceremony. Friday July 13s being rare, they celebrated their life together any and every month with a Friday 13th.

Garry and Cinda worked for a couple of years, then embarked in 1975 on a year-long journey around the world, visiting by train and local bus much of Europe and Asia, including Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, Iran (the Shah was still in control), Afghanistan (the Russians hadn't invaded yet), and Thailand, the Philippines, Japan and Hong Kong. Four months in India left an indelible mark and friends and family would eventually benefit from Garry's growing mastery of delicious curries.

Returning home in 1976, Garry found ready work as a letter carrier with Canada Post, a job he relished. He rose early each morning looking forward to meeting his colleagues and chatting with the customers on his route all the while appreciating working outside in the fresh morning air. Afternoons he spent restoring the 1912 house, which was in dire need of TLC, that they purchased in 1977. His efforts and attention to detail earned him an award from City for Sympathetic Restoration. That house was home to Garry and Cinda for just over forty years. The several stained glass windows he created adorn it still.

Garry took up cooking and chose to shop daily for fresh ingredients from the nearby grocery store on Broadway Avenue to create fine meals for the two of them. Before long, this expanded into many delicious dinners for family and friends (though Cinda was always responsible for dessert). After retiring from Canada Post, Garry worked for five years at this very store while Cinda continued working until her own retirement.

Garry was a thoughtful, caring, helpful man. He was a soulmate to Cinda, cook and caregiver to his Mom, Mary Dietz, and all-round aid to his in-laws, Con and Rita Romuld. He helped build their lakeside home at Birch Lake and as time passed, was so helpful to Con who lost his sight due to macular degeneration. He rarely refused a busker, offering kind words to those who could offer little or nothing in return.

Garry and Cinda sold their home after retirement and took up residence in Victoria Place Apartments in Saskatoon. There they added new friends to long-time friends, Garry continuing to cook fine meals for guests. Always holding hands, daily long walks throughout Saskatoon became a favourite exercise routine. They saved each other a few times on slippery winter sidewalks. After Garry's passing, Cinda remarked to a friend that she wasn't sure she could walk alone where she and Garry had often walked together. Cinda's friend exclaimed '' But that's the whole city, right?''

Garry was keenly interested in news and politics. He died the morning of the English language leaders' debate before the April 2025 federal election, but not before listening from his hospital bed to the French language debate in translation the evening before.

Garry leaves his wife Cinda, sisters-in-law Shirley Metka (Rob), Janice McBride (John) and nieces Austin Metka, Rachael Lipton (Mike) and Lea McBride, and two great nieces, Juliette and Audrey Lipton.

At Garry's request, no funeral services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to any of the following would be especially appreciated:
