Helen Elizabeth Gerster

With sadness but heartfelt love, we announce the passing of Helen Gerster, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother who died peacefully with her daughters April 9, 2026.

Helen is survived by her daughters Christine (Ken) Meier and Yvonne (Derek) Hachkewich, grandchildren Thomas, Mitchell (Rhiannon), Haylee, Cole and great granddaughter Arwyn. She is predeceased by her parents, Erich and Anna, husband (Gilmour), son Murray, and siblings (Bernard, Norbert, Rita, Margaret, Leonard, Alois and Hubert).

Helen was born in Humboldt on November 11, 1934. She grew up on a small farm in Burr. She was the 2nd oldest of 15 children. She was a huge help to her entire family. After completing her grade 11 in Munster, she went straight to St. Elizabeth's Hospital School of Nursing in Humboldt to become a Registered Nurse, graduating in 1956. She toured the province with the TB survey and then worked at the Borden Union Hospital where she met Gilmour.

Helen married Gilmour in 1960 and enjoyed 65 years together. They had 3 children Christine, Murray and Yvonne. She loved being a mom and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed farm life, gardening, growing flowers and helped her husband with everything from driving tractors and trucks, fencing and calving while working part time as an RN at Borden Union Hospital. She did whatever was needed whenever it needed to be done. She was skilled in sewing, knitting, crocheting, needle point etc.

She was a Registered Nurse for over 40 years and we were told she was the best foot care nurse around. She was very friendly, enjoyed meeting new people and would try to find things in common with them.

Helen truly enjoyed connecting with others and would always try convincing them to stay for a meal or snack, often serving angel food cake or cinnamon buns. Helen was a great cook and baker. Her cakes were sought after at church bake sales. She often volunteered at the school, museum, housing authority and church. She also loved caring for her grandchildren and enjoyed baking cookies and having tea parties with them.

Helen's faith was important to her, attending church regularly. She worked hard, often working well into the evening to accomplish what was important to her. She was selfless, rarely complained and helped others in any way she could. Helen was a truly a kind, loving, caring person. She will be missed and remembered by all that knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Ann's Nursing Home in Saskatoon, a place where people are truly respected and cared for. Live streaming will be available at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 16, 2026 at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com.
