Irene Nemanishen, of Langham, SK, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 90 years with her son Perry at her side.
Irene was born October 30, 1934 and grew up in the hills and valleys of Thrums, British Columbia. She had one brother, Larry and her parents were Fred and Polly Reibin. She often reminisced about what it was like back then - living in the mountains. She described being careful to avoid the bears and mountain lions on their walks to school and how you could see God all around you in the rivers, the trees and all that nature had to offer.
Irene met her husband of 70 years, Peter, when she was only 16 years old. He was working in B.C. at the time and grew smitten with Irene - eventually convincing her to move back to Saskatchewan with him to raise a family. She admitted with a smirk that it was his car that impressed and convinced her - and she would follow it up with "I was 16 - what did I know?" whilst covering up her mouth and giggling.
Peter and Irene were married in 1952; raised their 3 boys Rick, Randy and Perry and spent all but one of their 70 years of marriage in the Town of Langham, SK. Together, they embarked on the adventure of starting up a business - Nemanishen Contracting Ltd. In 1963. While Peter was out dozing bush and building roads, Irene was the number cruncher. She kept the books, raised the boys and often assisted Peter with moving equipment and cooking for the crews.
Irene loved visiting with her family. For too many years to count, Christmas was always at "Grandma and Grandpa" Nemanishen's. There was billiards to play, gifts to open and Russian tarts to eat. Irene strived to make everyone who entered her doors feel 'at home'. She was very hospitable - with cookies on the table and a pot of tea or a cup of juice ready for your arrival.
Irene is pre-deceased by parents Fred and Polly Reibin; and her late husband, Peter Nemanishen. She is survived by her brother, Larry (Irene) Reibin; her sons Rick (Elaine) Nemanishen; Randy (Janet) Nemanishen; Perry Nemanishen; grand-children Darcy (Lindsay) Nemanishen; Shane (Mandy) Nemanishen; Damaris (Abe) Rempel; Cody Nemanishen; Jason (Sam) Nemanishen; Brandon Nemanishen; her niece Kim (Peter) Koteles; 11 beautiful great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the City Hospital Foundation. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Saskatoon Funeral Home on February 15, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon and internment will follow for all those who wish to attend.
