The family of Dr. Jack Shiffman is deeply saddened to announce his passing in Winnipeg at the age of 94.
Jack lived every moment of his life to the fullest, finding great joy in all he did. He and his sister Florence grew up in Selkirk, MB, where his family owned a store. He met his lifelong love, Beverly, in Winnipeg. After marrying, and having their first child, Howie, they moved to Toronto where Bev worked so Jack could pursue a degree in dentistry. Jack set up his first dental practice in Flin Flon, MB, stopping in Winnipeg just long enough for second child, Carol, to be born. A third child, Ken, was born during their time in Flin Flon. Jack had a thriving practice there for 9 years after which the family moved to Chicago in support of his pursuit of an oral surgery specialty. Upon completion, he chose to locate his practice in Saskatoon, becoming the first oral surgeon in the province. It was in Saskatoon that their fourth child, Harold, was born. Jack was a skilled and compassionate surgeon. He taught for many years at the Dental College and was well-liked by patients, students, staff and colleagues.
Jack was also very involved in the community. He belonged to Kinsmen in his younger days and later was active with the Saskatoon B'nai B'rith, Saskatoon Rotary Club and Saskatoon Shrine Club, volunteering, with Bev, for many fundraisers and playing in the drum and bugle band. He so enjoyed playing in parades around the province! Music was another love of Jack's. An avid and talented trumpet player, he played with the Saskatoon Concert Band for 40 years, where he was affectionately known as "Doc". He also played many joyful years with the Saskatoon Klezmer Band alongside his good friend David Kaplan.
Jack was a passionate golfer spending many happy days at Riverside Golf Course with his golf buddies. He and Bev spent winters in Florida where he could continue to golf in mild weather, until Bev's health made the trip too difficult. As Bev's health declined, Jack became her loyal caregiver, making a heroic effort to keep her at home for as long as possible. Bev eventually had to go into long term care and, due to Covid, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on opposite sides of a chain link fence. But Jack was stoic through it all. When he lost Bev in 2020, his own health began to decline, and he moved back to Winnipeg, where Ken took loving care of him until his passing.
Jack was predeceased by his parents Ben and Ann Shiffman and his wife Beverly. He leaves to mourn his sister, Florence Marr, children Howard Shiffman (Debbie Anschell), Carol Wylie (Peter Kooy), Ken Shiffman (Wendy Seversen) and Harold Shiffman (Lisa), grandchildren Dana, Kate, Jessica, Alezah, Sophie, Ben, Sam, Hannah, Millia, Judah, Aaron, and great-grandchildren Anna, Eli, Grayson, Jonah, and Norah, as well as nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Ediliza Monton and her care team, whose companionship gave Dad comfort and company in his last months. Donations in Jack's name can be made to the Jack and Bev Shiffman Fund at the Saskatoon Community Foundation, Home - Saskatoon Community Foundation or CFHU ' Canadian Friends Of The Hebrew University. The Funeral Service will take place at Congregation Agudas Israel in Saskatoon on Tuesday, October 8 at 2:00 PM. Condolences may be left for the family at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
