Janice Schmitz passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at St. Paul's Hospital on April 13, 2026, at the age of 66.
Janice was born on April 11, 1960, in Melfort, SK. She was raised on a farm near Pleasantdale, SK. From a young age, she was a caregiver, helping to look after her mother, father, and brothers due to her mother's illness. Her caring nature never wavered.
After graduating, Janice attended Regina Business School. She later moved to Saskatoon and worked at Sask Mutual. Janice went on to obtain her Special Care Aide certificate and provided compassionate, loving care to residents in numerous long-term care facilities in Saskatoon. She had a special way with residents and connected with them when others could not.
Janice married Mervin, and they shared 39 devoted years together. They were blessed with two wonderful children: their son Ian (wife Megan and son Jenson), and their daughter Kaitlin (husband Kenneth and children Ellie and Logan). She is also lovingly remembered by her brother Ross and many other relatives. Janice was predeceased by her father, Henry; her mother, Marguerite; and her brothers, Doug and Gerald.
Janice found great joy in hosting family and friends, whether for holidays, birthdays, special occasions, or simply to share a cup of coffee. Everyone was always welcome in her home, where there was never a shortage of delicious meals and desserts. She was widely known for her perogies, cabbage rolls, and baking, and even started a small side business sharing her talents.
Her pastimes included knitting, reading, gardening, and travelling. Janice had a gift for making friends wherever she went, and people were naturally drawn to her. When she asked how you were, she was genuinely interested in the answer. She had a wonderful sense of humour and a contagious laugh that could be recognized from the next room. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 2:00 PM. Pastor Peter Knelson of St. John's Lutheran Church will officiate. Lunch will follow at the Edwards Family Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
