Johanna (Prediger) McDonald
Jan 1932 – May 2026
**Livestream links are at the end of the obituary.
Our world was blessed with Johanna, the eldest child, born to John and Dora (Heisler) Prediger in Macklin, Sask. Johanna was followed by 6 brothers: Harry (Marie), Louis, Edwin (Mary), Mervin (Hildegarde), Vic (Jennie), Fred (Camille) and finally, Johanna received the gift of 2 sisters: Mary Anne and Rosemarie (Greg). They were a large family in a small home with much love. Growing up, mom learned to be a caregiver – to cook, bake, clean and learned the joy of music which sustained her all her life – singing, musical theatre, band and dancing.
Johanna left Macklin to work at banks in the surrounding communities, taking the train home on weekends. Working in the bank opened the door to Johanna’s adventurous side, moving her to BC (where she worked for RBC), she enjoyed eating cherries off the tree, enjoying the mountains and attending many dances, some aboard aircraft carriers.
Johanna met her favourite dance partner, Lionel (Scotty) McDonald whom she married in Saskatoon 1963. They made their home on Wiggins Ave where they made many wonderful friends. Their home hosted many house parties and family gatherings. The weeping willow tree in the back yard was the backdrop to many games, family pictures and even a wedding party or two. Johanna and Scotty became a part of the community including the Catholic parishes of Lady of Lourdes and then St Philip Neri. While dad was an “elite” usher, mom was in the choir praising God through music.
Johanna and Scotty became parents later in life when Marla and Ronald were born. They loved being parents and were heavily involved in our schooling and extra curricular activities. Johanna and Scotty were happy to cheer on Marla and Ron, but were also happy just to be with them, especially on camping trips and visiting their homes when they were older. Johanna was thrilled when Marla married Lance and Ron married Ursula, expanding her family to include the Hartmans and Finkels. Since family was so precious, the gift of grandchildren brought her great joy. John(Nerine) and great granddaughter Gabriella, Jordan(Carly) and great grandson Jacob, along with the youngest grandchildren Clover and Hayley made her cup full. She marvelled at the opportunities available to all of them and prayed for the world they would grow up in. All her children were immeasurably loved.
Johanna enjoyed gardening, reading, a variety of crafts, walking, golf and belonging to a choir. Family time – whether it be with her children or her many siblings/inlaws/nieces/nephews/aunts/uncles or cousins – was precious to her. Johanna greatly admired her parents, godmother Tante Johanna Eid and her dear friend Sheila Collins. She loved God and all His creation but especially the sunrise/sunsets and the smell of the air after a rainfall.
Johanna hoped that she would be remembered for “her faith, being welcoming (always ready to put the coffee pot on), keeping up the family tradition of making German Buns, and being willing to help.” While we are sad to say goodbye to mom/grandma and great grandma we know she will be so happy to reunite with her family that has gone before her – her parents, husband, her brothers – Harry/Marie, Louis, Edwin/Mary, Vic, her McDonald family in-laws, all extended family, and her many friends.
