Jose López

Jose Francisco López was born in Sevilla, Spain on January 19, 1930. Prior to entering the College of Medicine, at the University of Sevilla, Jose studied at the prestigious Colegio de Francisco de Paula, also in Sevilla.

Jose later completed his military service as a Lieutenant in the Spanish Foreign Legion in Northern Africa.

In 1956 Jose left for Chicago to complete his work in internal medicine at Mercy Hospital. He then started his residency in Cardiology at the Cardiovascular Institute at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.

In the summer of 1963, Jose moved his family to Saskatoon where he was asked to be the director of Hemodynamics Laboratory at the Royal University Hospital, where routine catheterizations and coronary angiography were performed. In the same year he also started the first Canadian pacemaker clinic, located in Saskatoon. In addition to doing research and treating patients, Jose also taught cardiology to medical students, residents and fellows as Professor of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. He retired in 1997, Professor Emeritus, and continued to teach and work in the field of cardiology on a part time basis for many more years.

He was an avid reader of literature and history. He enjoyed hiking, international travel and had a deep love for classical music and opera.

Jose was survived by his wife Matilde (died January 13, 2025), his children, Fernando, George and Julia, and pre-deceased by Isabel.
