It is with heavy hearts that the family of Josephine Marie Berthe Auriat [nee Lamoureux} announces her passing at Sunnyside Care Center on Monday, December 15 2025 at the age of 100.
She was predeceased by her parents Arthur Lamoureux and Aglaee Nivon and her husband Germain Auriat.
Josephine was born on a very cold January 27, 1925 in a farm log house with no doctor in attendance as one of triplets. Unfortunately, her two sisters, Claire and Rita only lived for a few days. Josephine would often wonder why she was the one who lived as she was the smallest of the three. She would often tell us that she had been put in a shoebox and set on the open oven door to keep warm. For the rest of her life Josephine had a dislike for winter and the cold that it brought.
Just before she would start school in 1932, her older brother Albert would drown in the lake situated by their house. This would greatly affect Josephine as she was now alone to go to school. This fear of being alone would be with her for the rest of her life. When school started her father put her on a horse to travel over 3 miles to Barrier Lake School. Being the only child in the family, Josephine was introduced to the hard work of farm life. It was her task to get the cows from the pasture for milking morning and evening. Her father was busy clearing his land, Josephine spent much of her summer hours picking roots.
In August 1937, a son Arthur Jr was born to Arthur and Aglaee. Josephine had a little brother and was no longer alone.
On August 3rd, 1949 Josephine married Germain Auriat. The Auriat farm was situated right across the road from the Lamoureux farm. She would often laugh and say that her longest travel in life was to move across the road when she married Germain. They raised 3 children: Felix, Odette and Joanne. Josephine was a loving mother and eventually most of all, a proud grandmother.
Josephine was an avid crafter and especially enjoyed quilting. In the summer her gardens were always abundant and her flowerbeds exquisite. She took pride in whatever she did whether it was sewing, baking or cooking. All meals had to have a dessert and visitors knew that she would have a treat for them. She definitely had a sweet tooth. She was an active member of the St. Front Ladies of St. Anne Church group.
A big change in her life occurred in 1983. Her Husband Germain suffered a heart attack that made farming difficult. In 1985 they decided to move to the town of Watson. There she soon met other ladies who were avid quilters, they would meet often to work on quilts. Mom set up a quilting frame in her basement where the ladies would gather around to work on the quilt. Josephine took up bowling, coming home with many trophies. In the summer she of course would plant a big garden and have the flower beds to tend to. Her and Germain became involved with helping at the care home and delivering meals with the meal on wheels program.
In 1998 Germain passed away. Soon after, her son Felix retired from his teaching career. They decided to move to Saskatoon. In Saskatoon Josephine soon met 3 other card playing ladies. They would each take their turn to host the weekly card game. Since there was no room in the yard for a garden she had more time for her flower beds. She planted amazing flower beds. She was a season subscriber to Persephone Theatre and the Barn Playhouse. Unfortunately, as she aged, macular degeneration robbed her of much of her eyesight. She no longer was able to do her favorite things like craft, sew, play cards, and read. Eventually, Josephine moved in to Sunnyside Care Centre.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Sunnyside Care Centre for the care and attention they gave Josephine.
