"WE MADE A MEMORY"
If you knew Ken Leek, you knew his favorite saying. What mattered to Ken was making memories with people he cared about. On February 14, 2026, Ken Leek-beloved husband, father, popa, and friend-completed a life filled with more than 91 years of making memories.
Early life for Barbara and Husky Leek's only child was the Saskatchewan farm, a dog named Bruce, some imaginary friends and a practical curiosity that stayed with him his entire life.
Ken's was a long life defined by connection. A career that took him around Saskatchewan on a construction crew, then across Canada with the weather service, he had a love for travel and people - believing "there were no strangers, just friends I haven't met yet." For 63+ years, his strongest connection was as devoted partner and best friend to his wife, Mereda. Back and forth across the country, they faced life's challenges, opportunities and joys together, as a team. Home was wherever family was, with both Saskatchewan and Newfoundland holding a special place in his heart.
A "diner" in a world of "feeders", Ken was always the last one at the table-savoring the meal, the conversation, and the company. He was slow to anger, quick to laugh, and famously bad at goodbyes. Whether standing on the porch or lingering on the phone or FaceTime, there was always one more thing to share with those he loved. Fitting that his last goodbye was long but loving.
He is survived by his wife, Mereda; his sons, Kevin (Debbie) of Saskatoon, and Wayne (Eva) of Toronto. Much beloved Popa to Stacey (Andrew), Jaimie (Cody), Curtis, Julianne and Great Popa to Charlotte & Piper. The votes are in: as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was the best ever. Ken leaves a wide circle of family & friends near and far who will miss his wisdom, his laugh, and his long goodbyes.
A family celebration of life will happen at a later date. Special thanks to the entire team at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital for their kindness at the end of Ken's journey. In lieu of flowers, you can support their work (https://sphfsk.ca/donate/ ) or your cause of choice that supports people.
Our final ask is to follow Ken's advice: Be curious. Be present. Be involved. Go out and make memories with those you love. And always have the dessert.
