Lee Hergott passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, at The Hospice at Glengarda in Saskatoon, with family at his side. Born on November 26, 1941, to Leander and Martha (nee Duerr) Hergott in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, he was the fourth of five sons who were raised on the family farm west of Humboldt. He attended Dixon School, did some high school by correspondence, and then pursued higher education at St. Peter's College in Muenster. Afterwards he attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he met and later married Marjorie "Peggy" Hamilton in 1962. They shared 63 years of marriage, raising three children and welcoming five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Lee began his accounting career articling and receiving his Chartered Accountant designation while working with Frank Thurmeier, which later joined Winspear Higgins. He later co-founded Hergott, Duval, Stack & Partners in 1982 (which merged with Ernst & Young in 2012). Lee was widely regarded as an innovative tax practitioner. He was a governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation and was a presenter at their conferences. After leaving public practice, he spent several years at Reisinger Developments as a consultant.
He had a strong faith, one that carried him through some of life's trials and gave him strength to face his health challenges, hospital stays, and even at Glengarda, where he amazed us with his courage, grace, humour, and deep spiritual resilience. Lee was involved in multiple church and community initiatives. He was an active member at Holy Spirit Parish for fifty years where he served on the finance committee for several years and sang in the ten o'clock choir. He was instrumental in the development of Trinity Manor Retirement Home and served as a director of the Maunders McNeil Foundation for thirty years.
Lee will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, sense of humour, wisdom, and ability to converse with people on a wide range of subjects. He enjoyed nature, fishing, hunting, spending time with family and friends at the lake or at his hobby farm and especially entertaining with Peggy. He was a talented singer, could play musical instruments by ear and particularly enjoyed being a part of "The Young at Heart" singing group.
Family was especially important to him. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was a wonderful father and Papa. The family enjoyed many good times at the family cabin at Wakaw Lake. He enjoyed watching the grandchildren at their many activities and even his health struggles later in life did not stop him from travelling to watch his grandsons curl.
He has touched the lives of so many and will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Peggy (nee Hamilton) of Saskatoon; son Terry (Lori) Hergott of Calgary and family - Joel (Chandi) Hergott of Calgary and their daughter Norah; Isabelle (Matthew Bockstael) of Calgary and their daughter Sylvie; Lauren Hergott of Edmonton; daughter Karen (Orlo) Drewitz of Saskatoon and their sons Adam and Matthew.
He is also survived by his brother Murray (Joan) Hergott of Humboldt; sisters-in-law Joan Hergott and Tina (Hergott) McConnell; and in-laws Shirley Hamilton, Maxine Hamilton, Jeannette (John) Caffrey, Johanna Wildeman, Marlene (Roman) Bergerman, Debbie Hamilton, Doug (Cheryl) Hamilton, John Hamilton, and Glenn (Bonnie) Hamilton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Leander and Martha (nee Duerr) Hergott; his son Greg; three brothers - Gerald (Jeanette), Harold, and Jerome Hergott; and in-laws Joe and Margaret Hamilton, Gerry Hamilton, and Llewellyn Wildeman.
A Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 3 PM., and the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 10:30 AM, celebrated by Fr. Ralph Kleiter. Both to be held at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon), with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at RUH, St. Paul's, Trinity Manor and the Hospice at Glengarda for all their care and support over the last three months. Donations in Lee's memory may be made to St. Paul's Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
