L. Wendell Dyck

January 1, 1937 — August 24, 2024

Wendell’s family announces his passing on August 24, 2024 at the age of 87. Wendell passed peacefully at Spruce Manor in Dalmeny where he had resided since late 2023.

Wendell was born Leslie Wendell Dyck in a farm house north of Borden in the dead of winter on January 1, 1937. He was the third living child of Alf and Annie Dyck, his twin sister, Virginia Faye having passed at birth. Born prematurely, for the first months of life, Wendell was washed with oil and stayed warm in a box in, on, or around the wood stove to keep him warm.

When Wendell was 6, the family moved east of Borden and Rocky River Farm was founded. School was difficult for Wendell and he stopped attending in grade 8 to work on the family farm, which he did for his entire life; first with his father, then on his own. The land was cropped and the farm raised beef cattle and prize winning Yorkshire pigs. Every spring and summer Rocky River Yorkshire pigs were hauled across the province, and in some years across the country, to be shown at various fairs.

Wendell married Judy Straub in 1971, and daughters Carol and Elizabeth followed soon after. Ever a supporter of community, Wendell was involved in many organizations. He was the last president of the East Borden Telephone Company before it was amalgamated into SaskTel. When the Lion’s Club started up in Borden, Wendell was a charter member. He was also a member of the Saskatoon Exhibition for over 45 years and was on the Board of Directors for 18 of those years. He served on the local Museum Board, the local school bus committee (before the school Division took over bus routes), the cemetery committee, and many others.

Wendell was fascinated with World War 2 history. He was an ardent Montreal Canadians fan. And he loved to sing. He sang through almost his entire life, singing in the church and community choirs, with a local men’s quartet - “Archie’s Angels”, and even in Bethany College’s oratorio choir. Wendell also liked to travel. Later in life, he enjoyed travelling with Judy, and they went on various cruises and bus tours, seeing the world together until Judy passed in 2015.

Left to mourn him are his daughters Carol (Leighton) Tebay and Elizabeth Torrens, his grandchildren, David Fisher, Matthew Fisher, Lynae Tebay, Ryley Torrens, Anna Torrens, and Shelby Torrens, and his brother Gerald (Cleone) Dyck. He was predeceased by his wife Judy, son-in-law’s Michael Fisher and J. Curtis Torrens, his parents Alf and Annie Dyck, his in-laws Arthur and Eleanor Straub, siblings Robert, Virgina, Loverna (Hiebert) and Donald, brother in-law Sherman Hiebert, sister-in-law Laurie Ida (nee Straub), and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to extend our most sincere thanks to the staff of Spruce Manor for their care and attention to Wendell while he resided with them. In lieu of flowers the family would ask for donations to be made in Wendell’s memory to Redberry Bible Camp.

Wendell’s funeral service will be held on Monday, September 2 at 2:00 PM at the Borden Community Center in Borden, SK.
