Born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, Lois was the sixth of eight children born to Frank and Isabella Beggs.
Lois lived a life defined by service, compassion, and devotion to family. Though she never married, she enjoyed close relationships with her family, numerous friends and neighbours. She also loved children and dedicated much of her professional life to their education.
As an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, she not only taught in several Saskatoon elementary schools but also had the opportunity to teach abroad. She taught in England on a teacher exchange program and in Germany, completing two tours of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces. Her pupils brought her immense joy, and many fondly remember her enthusiasm for teaching and her ability to bring the world of Snoopy and the Peanuts characters to life in her classroom.
During her time in Europe, she cultivated a passion for walking in the mountains. She belonged to the European Walking Club and earned almost 100 medals and trophies for her talent! She also traveled extensively with her mother and sisters in Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Lois was intelligent, curious and committed to lifelong learning. Following her retirement from teaching, Lois obtained her Bachelor of Nursing degree. This education prepared her to work briefly in long term care and to confidently care for her aging mother.
Perhaps nowhere was Lois’s capacity for love more evident than in her devotion to her mother, Isabella. Their bond was extraordinary. Lois considered it both a privilege and a responsibility to ensure her mother’s comfort, dignity, and happiness. One of Lois’ proudest accomplishments was caring for her sweet ‘Bonnie Lass’, allowing her to pass away in the family home at the age of 103.
Lois was pre-deceased by her parents, Frank and Isabella; her brothers, Donald, Allan, Lyall, Ross; and her sisters, Doris, Diane, and Carol. She took great pride in her extended family and delighted in watching each new generation grow and flourish. Her legacy of love extended to her nieces, nephews, and their succeeding generations.
Lois will be remembered for her love of Snoopy, her strong but gentle nature, unwavering sense of duty, quiet humour, and generous heart. She enriched the lives of countless children, patients, family members, friends, and neighbours through her kindness and care.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to Lois’ dear friend, Pauline, for the years of loving support she provided, to numerous friends and neighbours, to the caregivers at Home Instead and the staff of Preston Special Care Home for their compassionate care during Lois’s final months.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date, with interment beside her beloved mother and father at Woodlawn Cemetery.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
