Michael Francis Patrick McCoy

Michael McCoy, born May 10, 1951, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2026 following a long battle with cancer. By his side were his husband Brian Smith and committed friends Fran Forsberg and Brenda Cote.

Mike was a quiet giant among observers and leaders of his community, and world. His formal education began at St. Joseph's Elementary School in Saskatoon. As he graduated from high school, his love of writing earned him a journalism scholarship to Carleton University. Although his career choice ultimately became accountancy, over writing, that creative spark remained a defining part of who he was. Later, drawn by a spirit of curiosity and a love of serving, Mike entered the travel and tourism industry where he spent many years, most notably with Thunderbird Travel.

In 1995, Mike joined Brian in the graphic design business they built together, Articulate Eye. There, his many talents truly flourished. It was also during this time that he reconnected with an important part of his past-his early efforts in the 1960s to create a safe and welcoming space for the gay community during an era when homosexuality was illegal. His work helping to create the Zodiac Friendship Society reflected his lifelong commitment to inclusion, compassion, and community. Even in his final days, Mike's thoughts turned often to the 2SLGBTQI community he cared deeply about.

Mike and Brian were married on July 26, 2025, a joyful milestone in their life together. He is lovingly remembered by Brian; his sister Catherine; his nephew Mike (Nicole); his nieces Sarah (Mike) and Becky (Jeff); his great-nieces and nephews Jakob, Will, Lili Mae, and Tori, and by his natural mother, Lorraine Stewart, who was unable to keep him. Mike's other family was the one formed through the deep friendship and unwavering care provided by Fran Forsberg and Brenda Cote, and who gave so generously of their time and energy to come sit by his side through days and nights, offering comfort, companionship, and love when it mattered most.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Saskatoon Home Care team. Thanks to the dedication of its nurses, aides, psychologist, occupational therapist, nurse practitioner, and paramedics, it was possible for Mike to remain at home, as he wished.

Mike's passing leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of many. His life, however, leaves an enduring legacy of kindness, curiosity, quiet courage, and a commitment to making the world more welcoming for others.
