In the morning of Wednesday October 15, 2025, our dad passed away. All four of his daughters are here in Saskatoon and were able to say goodbye. There will be a Memorial Gathering of Remembrance for him and for our mom, Annette Floyd at the Saskatoon Funeral Home Friday, October 17, 2025 at 3 PM for anyone who would like to attend.
Monte Keene Floyd, III was born on November 4, 1941 in Oklahoma City to Monte Keene Floyd, II and Edna Marie (Pishny) Floyd. He had a younger brother, Charles Allen, who passed away in 2020. They were born into a family of musicians, with roots in early Vaudeville dating back to the late 1800s. Both boys were musical, with Monte playing trombone and piano, and Charles playing drums and singing.
Monte was a prolific composer, writing his first work at the age of 3. He wrote for all sizes of ensemble, including many works which featured our mom on the piano. Monte earned his Ph.D. and Annette earned her Master's of Music at Eastman School of Music. After graduating, they lived in South Bend, Indiana, then moved to Saskatoon in 1971. They were supposed to be here for a year, and as dad used to say: "it's been a very long year."
Besides music and composing, dad loved softball. He coached and managed teams and was the President of the Saskatoon Minor Softball League for several years. He also helped run the International Softball Congress Men's Fast Pitch World Tournament in Saskatoon in 1997.
He was wicked smart and always had a joke to tell. He was creative, writing poetry and stories, and drawing thousands of pictures. He wrote extensive program notes for the Fort Bend Symphony and Brazosport Symphony Orchestra with incredible insight not just to the music, but also the lives of the composers, infusing them with humanity. He loved nature, often going for walks where he would follow the tracks of various animals. He had a fascination with wolves and ravens, in particular.
He and mom loved to travel. Favorite places included France, Czechia, Germany and Poland. They made friends wherever they went and always had a story to share.
He is survived by his beloved children: Amy Billasch (Robert), Sarah Fox (Gerald), Laura Levitan (David), and Jennifer Floyd (Blaine Doherty), as well as his grandchildren: Austin Billasch; Matan and Doron Fox; Adam, Reah, Mika, and Zara Levitan; and Sonora, River, and Ori Phillips.
A sincere thank you to the many friends both of our parents had throughout their time here on this earth. There are too many special people to name, but you know who you are.
