Neil Alfred McLoughlin
January 23, 1931 - October 14,2025
Surrounded by family, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Neil Alfred (Mac) McLoughlin, passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, in the evening, on October 14, 2025, at the age of 94.
Mac is survived by his wife Carmen Dolores (Del), children, Beverley-Ann (Bob), Brendan (Shelley) and Donovan; grandchildren, Cameron (Elyse), Christopher (Rebecca), and Brittany, Morgan, Sean (Shea), Lauren (Taylor), and Jenna McLoughlin; great grandchildren Sloane, and August (Sean and Shea), Teddie (Lauren and Taylor) and Rhyver (Christopher and Rebecca). Neil was predeceased by his son, Neil Patrick, aged 19, on November 15, 1990. The late Neil Patrick shared a birthday with his dad.
Neil Alfred McLoughlin was born in Cape Town, South Africa, on January 23, 1931, to Edward Hamilton McLoughlin and Blanche Reda McLoughlin (nee Johnson). He was the youngest of seven children.
Neil grew up in Rosebank, near Cape Town, the youngest of seven children. He spent his carefree younger years on his parents' acreage enjoying tending to his chickens, playing in the outdoors, riding horses bareback, climbing trees, and golfing with his neighborhood friends, the Faull boys, from the age of seven on.
Sadly, Neil's dad passed away on Christmas Day, in 1942, at 72 years old. Neil was eleven years old. Neil later attended high school at Observatory Boys High, where he enjoyed his studies, his friendships, and participating in soccer and cricket.
Mac learned the auto mechanic trade after completing high school, apprenticing on the job, working with his older brother, Kenneth. Later, after he married Del, and welcomed four children, he attained his Illuminations Engineering degree at night school through the University of Cape Town. The family immigrated to Canada from South Africa in 1977.
One of the saddest times in our family's lives happened on November 15, 1990, when our son and brother, Neil Patrick, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep at the young age of 19. This tragedy broke our parent's hearts as they struggled to navigate through dealing with the loss of their son, Neil Patrick, especially as he was born on our dad's 40th birthday and was so named after him.
Mac secured employment in the industrial lighting and electrical sales field, winning numerous design and sales awards, later establishing his own company in Canada in his fifties, and working until he was 72. He served terms as president of the Saskatchewan Electrical Association and was respected by many in that industry.
Neil enjoyed watching and participating in his seven grandchildren's activities, golfing, gardening, playing guitar and keyboards, and was also involved in scouting and coaching youth soccer for many years. In the past few years, he was fortunate enough to become a great grandfather to four beautiful children, with a fifth great grandchild due later this October.
Dad built his own home in Saskatoon, together with a co-operative and his family in 1981. He was frugal and handy with tools and the like. Never afraid of a challenge, he was always one to attempt to fix whatever needed repairing on his cars and in their home, sometimes taking on more than he realized! Being stubbornly self-reliant, he hated paying anyone to do something he felt he could do himself.
Mac was quick witted, had a great sense of humor, and always saw the funny side in things. Dementia dealt him a cruel blow. All of us who witnessed his difficult journey tried to help him through his struggles with this debilitating disease. We will miss him very dearly. He was one of a kind and meant so much to the many people he got to know along his life's journey of 94 years and 10 months.
Neil lived a very full, industrious life of more joys than sorrows, seeing so many changes and advancements in the world along the way throughout his busy years. We are proud to call this man our family patriarch and will attempt to carry on his legacy, applying the examples he set for us in our own lives.
We thank the staff of St. Paul's and Royal University Hospitals, as well as the staff of Porteous Lodge for the consistent, kind, and compassionate care of Neil (Mac) during his stays there. Neil will be laid to rest in the Catholic Section of Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Our thanks also to the Saskatoon Funeral Home for their reassuring support and assistance with the funeral and burial arrangements for our dad, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather, Neil Alfred McLoughlin. May his dear soul rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord God in heaven.
Prayers will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon, on Monday, October 20, at 7 PM. Neil's celebration of life will be held at St. Patrick Church, 3339 Centennial Dr, Saskatoon, on Tuesday, October 21, at 11 AM.
