Raymond Penny

The family of Ray Penny are saddened to announce his passing on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. Ray is survived by his son, David (Maryann) Penny; daughters, Catherine (Duane) Vincent, Linda (Mike) Calow and Susan (Martin) Cooper; seven grandchildren, Matthew Penny, Ryan (Tylar) Vincent, Nicole (Tyler) Dellebuur, Tori (Dusty) Abrahamson, Shawn (Sweet Ann) Abrahamson, Tara Cooper and Taylor Cooper; two great grandsons, Jace and Lucas; sister, Marjorie Middleton; sister-in-law, Mae Cameron; brothers, Jack (Jackie) Penny and Ken Penny.

Ray was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Penny; parents, Richard A. Penny and Edra K. Penny; brother-in-law, Larry Middleton; and sister-in-law, Gladys Penny.

Ray was born in Abernethy, Saskatchewan on January 8, 1931. He was raised on the family farm and educated at the Abernethy School. He went on to work with International Trucks, followed by Dominion Sound Equipment. Ray and Elizabeth Evoy fell in love and married in 1954. Three years later, they were transferred to Saskatoon where he was the Branch Manager for Dominion Sound. He joined up with Wood Cogger Ltd., later forming Wood Cogger (Sktn) Ltd. where he was the owner/operator until retiring in 1991. All four of his children were born and raised in Saskatoon.

Ray served on the Board of St. Martin’s United Church and also sang tenor in the choir. He was a long-standing member of the Barbershop Harmony Society as baritone in quartet and chorus. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Board of Trade and North Sask. Business Association. In 1991, he was inducted as a Life Member of the Saskatoon Construction Association.

He was a member of Riverside and Moon Lake Golf Clubs for many years. He was an accomplished sailor enjoying time on numerous Saskatchewan Lakes one year winning the Novice Cup at the Jackfish Lake Regatta, with his first mate David. They also won a novice race down at Katepwa together.  Ray also enjoyed the fellowship and sport of curling for a number of years. Betty and Ray enjoyed many winters at their Texas home in the 1980’s and also took numerous trips and vacations to locations in the USA, Europe, South America and Canada.

Some of Ray’s favorite times were the many great trips to the cabin at Katepwa Beach, camping holidays in Alberta and many wonderful family Christmas memories. He also enjoyed annual goose hunting trips with his brother Ken and other friends. Ray and Betty celebrated over 60 years of happy married life together. Family meant everything to Ray, he was a very proud and loving father and grandfather.

A Celebration of Life for Ray will be held in the spring with details to follow.
