With profound sadness and gratitude for a life well lived, we share that our father Robert Neil Matheson passed away on February 7th, 2026. Born on August 4,1928, Dad was blessed with a life filled with family he adored and friends he cherished. He loved people and appreciated the many friendships made through a rich career served in many Saskatchewan settings, and through involvement in many community service organizations.
Dad was a storyteller and had the wonderful ability to use humour and kindness in the tales he told and the tributes he delivered. He was a great listener and people loved to be around him.
Married on November 22, 1954, Dad and our mother Stella had a union based upon love, respect and commitment. They raised their children, danced together, travelled, developed enhanced communities through their volunteer work, and were always there to support others. Their children Avon, Garth and Glynn were taught to embrace life long learning, an appreciation of their heritage, and kindness. Dad had such great respect and love for Mom and cared for her through illness late in her life until her passing in 2017. He missed her greatly and spoke about her often.
Dad received so many incredible honours throughout his career with the RCMP, Saskatchewan Farm Ownership Board, and his involvement with community organizations. No one was more proud than Dad to wear the beautiful scarlet and gold of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and he often spoke of the dedication of his colleagues as they worked through a number of challenging cases in our province’s history. The RCMP Veterans Association, Shriners, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Drums and Bugles Corps, Scottish Rite, Royal Order of Scotland, Eastern Star, St John’s Cathedral, and Elmwood Lodge Board were only some that he led and participated in. His most prestigious awards included Queen Elizabeth’s Gold and Silver Jubilee medals and the Canadian John Ross Matheson award for distinguished service in the Scottish Rite.
He was a prairie boy at heart, being raised in Red Deer where he had many lifelong friends, and living most of his life under Saskatchewan skies. He loved time spent at our Weyakawin Lake cottage and talked often about the beauty of the majestic trees and clear Northern waters. He was proud of Saskatchewan and its people and we know his contributions to both will be his legacy.
Our family is deeply grateful to the staff and residents at Preston Park 2 and his many friends who cared for Dad so well. He spoke of all of you with heartfelt appreciation.
Dad was so proud of his family and he will be deeply missed by his children Avon Whittles (Lorne), Garth Matheson, Glynn Matheson, his grandchildren Raegan Dirk ( Dan Dirk - Pothier), Carter Matheson ( Kayla Denes), and Cady Matheson. He will also be remembered by his great grandchildren Bentley, Nolan, and Charly - three little ones who brought him great joy.
A Life Celebration will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 8th 2026 at St John’s Anglican Cathedral (816 Spadina Cres.E.) followed by a reception at the Saskatoon Shrine Club (1021 Sask.Cr. W.) In lieu of flowers, for those so wishing, memorial donations may be made to Elmwood Lodge (www.elmwoodyxe.ca) or the Shrine Patient Travel Fund (wawashriners.org).
