The family of Romesh Chandra Kachroo is saddened to announce his peaceful passing at the age of 83 years on March 15, 2026 in Saskatoon. Romesh was born on August 19, 1942, to mother Mohan Rani Kachroo (née Kaul, 'Nana') and father Nagindra Mohan Kachroo ('Bhaijee') in Raghunath Mandir, Srinagar, Kashmir. His early years in Shalimar were in a large joint-family home where he enjoyed the company of many close family members including his beloved grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, and dozens of cousins with whom he grew up and kept in touch throughout his life.
In 1966, Romesh arrived in Canada as a graduate of Sagar University, attending University of Calgary as an M.Sc. and Doctoral student to continue his mathematical research on Borel and Strong Summability of Fourier Series. In 1971, he met the love of his life Irene while teaching in rural Saskatchewan. They married and had three children, of whom he was immensely proud. During his long career as a high school teacher, including at Bedford Road Collegiate and Mount Royal Collegiate, he was much appreciated for his talent in sharing a love of math and making it accessible. Later in life, he pursued his interest in spirituality by teaching world religions along with math at Nutana Collegiate.
Romesh enjoyed long walks, badminton, swimming, afternoons with his poker club, reading books on and discussing spirituality and philosophy, and sipping a whisky in good company. Many of us will remember him for his delicious cooking. Romesh was a magnificent chef. He prepared delicious meals for his family every weeknight and, with Irene, regularly hosted dinner parties, both large and small. He also cherished time at Irene's ancestral home, often among her side of their family, doing yard work and tending massive bonfires at the cabin on the shore of Turtle Lake. Most of all he loved family, and the many friends who were like family to him. He had a warm, generous, and playful nature, which endeared him to all.
Romesh is mourned by his wife Irene Mae Kachroo (née Otteson), children Tara May, Meera Jo, and Ravi Lee; his sister Vijay Lakshmi Kachru; and his four grandsons Julian Morris Kachroo, Rohan Kachroo McMillan, Ivor Lee Worobec Kachroo, and Mohan Lal Kachroo. He was predeceased by his brother Balkrishan and his brother-in-law Martin Allan Otteson. We share our grief with countless close family members and friends in Canada, USA, and India. We called him Romesh, Dad, Saba, Laloo, Sabtot, and Bhaisaab, and we loved him so much.
A celebration of his life will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home on Saturday April 4 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society( 55 Clair Avenue West, Suite 300 Toronto, Ontario), or to the Hospice at Glengarda ( St Paul's Hospital Foundation, 1702 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0Z9).
