Ronald Joseph Bertrand
1943-2025
Ron Bertrand of Saskatoon, SK. Passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital on August 14th, 2025 surrounded by his family. Ron is lovingly survived by his wife Elaine of 57 years, his son Scott (Deanna), his daughter Sharla, his grandchildren Andrew, Nathanael, Rebecca (Isaac), and Kari, his sisters Rosemarie and Helen, his brother Louis and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his grandson Braden, his parents Napoleon and Loretta, his sister Madeline and brothers Raymond, Maurice, Leon, Robert, and Philippe.
Ronald Joseph was born on May 6th, 1943 to Loretta and Napoleon Bertrand in Paradise Hill Saskatchewan. He grew up on the family farm and then in the town of St. Walburg. He started working as a young man in a nickel mine in Thompson, Manitoba and then moved back to Saskatchewan and helped build the Gardiner Dam. On August 16th, 1965 he was sworn in as a member of the Saskatoon Police service and began his 27 year career. He met his love Elaine on a blind date in May of 1966 and married her on October 28, 1967. In 1976 they were blessed to adopte their son Scott and then in 1979 they welcomed the lovely little Sharla.
Ron spent his working years policing and enforcing the law in Saskatoon and was promoted through the ranks to become Staff Sergeant of Major Crimes, where he lead a team in solving many high profile cases, until his retirement in June of 1992. Curling was his favourite sport and he curled for many years on the police curling team. He went on to become a real estate agent for 20 years and continued his many philanthropic activities. He donated blood as often as he could over approximately 40 years, he volunteered selling tickets for junior hockey and the Brier.
In 1998 Ron welcomed his first grandchild Braden into the family and Braden was swiftly followed by Kari, Andrew, Nathanael and Rebecca. In December of 2004 he had the honour of awarding Scott his Calgary Police badge when Scott graduated from police college. He loved to sit and talk shop and exchange work stories with Scott, appreciating that his son followed in his footsteps.
Sadly in December of 2021 we had to say goodbye to Braden, who died due to complications with his diabetes when he was only 23. When we, Ron’s family, were standing around his death bed we all cried and talked about how he would soon get the privilege of seeing Braden again.
Ron loved to play cards with the family and watch sports. He never shied away from changing the oil, getting his hands dirty or tackling a building project. He had a very quiet, humble, reliable and steady presence that was the back bone of our family. His loss is deeply felt and we will miss him forever, may he rest in peace.
Ron’s celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, August 20th at 2:00 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home 338 4th avenue North, lunch to follow.
