The Penner and Chovin families, with heavy hearts, announce the death of Ronald Penner. Ron passed away unexpectedly in the early hours of July 29th, 2024.
Ron's family left their home in Chortitza Ekaterinoslav Russia for Canada, by way of Rega and England and boarded the Empress of Scotland. Somewhere off the shores of Southampton their youngest child Ronald was born. He was named after the ship's captain. The ships doctor put a fifty dollar bill in the baby's wee hand. Ron's birth onboard gave him dual citizenship which he was very proud of.
The Penner Family settled outside Saskatoon on a farm. Ron eventually owned the farm. He enjoyed tending his crops and watching them thrive. Harvest was a wonderful time of the year for him. He was a hard worker. Ron and his seven siblings all attended Langham School. While in school he became interested in hard ball. He became one of the pitchers for the Langham ball team. With his 6ft 4 body he looked quite spectacular as he hurled the ball over the plate. His claim to fame was pitching "no hit, no runs" games.
As Ron became more mechanized on the farm he decided to take on a job in the city. He joined the Labatt's staff. He found the work interesting and enjoyed the people he worked with. In retirement Ron spent more time at the Pike Lake cottage. He took an interest in flea markets, auction sales, and antique shows. He had a soft spot for antique clocks.
Ron and Marjory Chovin were married in 1956. They quietly celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on July 28th 2024.
Ron was a patient, gentle and loving person. He had a quick smile and great laugh. He had a sharp sense of humour. He kept everyone laughing with his "one liners".
Ron is lovingly remembered by his wife Marjory Penner, his niece Linda Paulow (Dale), his Nephews Don Adilman (Bev), David Adilman, Greg Adilman (Barb), Jack Thiessen (Delores), and Ron Thiessen (Susan), his sister-in-law Eleanor Guina, niece Debbie Chovin, nephew Randy Chovin (Sandra) and many great nieces and nephews.
Ron was predeceased by his father Johann and his mother Helena, his brothers Peter, John, Jake, and David. His sisters Helen, Katherine and Margret and two infant brothers.
Ron's family is very thankful for the care Ron received from his home care nurses, therapists, and the seniors first groups. Ron was very appreciative of Dr Helms.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday August 2nd at 10:00 am at the Saskatoon Funeral Home 338 4th Ave N, with interment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
