Ross McGunigal

Jun 26, 1942 — Jun 15, 2026

Ross McGunigal, 83, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026 at Porteous Lodge.

He was born on June 26, 1942 to Verna Johnson and Jim McGunigal on an Air Force base in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. He spent his childhood first in Bradwell, then Saskatoon, and later on a farm. He attended school in Saskatoon and Dundurn.

Ross started working summers with ASL Paving Ltd. in 1960. His career there spanned 47 years and he had many roles as he moved up through the company to ultimately become an operations manager. His work was vital to the highway network in Saskatchewan and he often said he had probably driven over a million miles. In 2007 he was made an honorary life member of the Saskatchewan Roadbuilders’ Association. After retirement from ASL he kept busy selling gravel for Croft Aggregates Limited, driving cars from other cities back to Saskatoon for car dealerships, and most notably he returned to ASL to serve as a historical guide for the book ‘From the Rear View Mirror, The ASL Paving Story, 1950-2015’.

Ross was an outgoing, good-natured person with a zest for life. He loved talking to people and having a good laugh. He was a self-described ‘urban guy’ who enjoyed movies, cars, music concerts, and travel. He liked watching sports such as hockey and football and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was also a history buff and delighted in going to museums and soaking up knowledge.

He was a loving son, father, grandfather and husband. Ross will be remembered by family and friends for his kindness, wit, and charm.

Ross is survived by his children Flynn (Mary) and Brandi (Shawn), his grandchildren Maggy and Joey, and by siblings Murray, Mitzi, Jyl, and Greg.

He was predeceased by his wife Joan, his mother Verna, and his father Jim.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 08, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Jubilee Residences Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.
