Satindar Nijhawan
1945-2025
With profound sorrow, the family announces the peaceful death of our beloved Satindar on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, after a valiant battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Satindar is dearly missed by his wife Charlene (Mellesmoen), daughters Anu (Jeff), and Rose; step-children Jeffrey (Chris), Janelle (Ryan), Kimberley (Glen), Steven (Danica), Samara (Cole) and Rachel (Andrew); grandchildren Airo, Warner, Camilla, Weston, Alex, Celina, Liv and Bryant; in-laws Lou and Mildred Paquin and their families.
Satindar was born October 12, 1945 in Jhang, West Pakistan to Manohar and Prakash Nijhawan. He grew up in Delhi. Mourning his passing in India are his brother Narender (Kiran) Nijhawan, sister Swadesh (Brij) Bhalla, many nieces, nephews and extended family.
After earning his electrical engineering degree in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and working there for two years, Satindar ventured to the US to complete his Master's degree in Madison, Wisconsin in 1969. He worked in Norman, Oklahoma before coming to Canada. He practiced engineering in various Canadian cities, until settling in Moose Jaw, SK in the early 80's and embarking on a storied career as a SIAST instructor in Electronics Engineering Technology. He and his first wife Kamal raised their two daughters in Moose Jaw, where they had many friends from SIAST and the East Indian community. Satindar was a dedicated and respected teacher, and a valued co-worker. He never hesitated to take on new challenges and was readily available to assist and encourage his students. He enjoyed being a Skills Canada judge in many annual competitions across the country. He finished teaching his last class on the Moose Jaw campus in December, 2019.
When asked of his interest or hobbies, Satindar had only one answer: travel. Not only did he tour extensively internationally, he also loved a getaway anywhere in Canada. Upon completing a semester at SIAST he was known to hop on a bus and head to the mountains. He loved to buy a pass and travel across North America, paying extra whenever possible to secure the front seat and enjoy the view of the open road before him (and chat with the driver).
Satindar was known for his welcoming smile, warm heart, kind disposition and adventurous spirit. He was proud to be a Canadian citizen. He loved meeting new people and socializing; most recently he enjoyed the Tuesday night tile rummy games with his condo friends. In his last years Satindar was distressed to lose his independence and limit his excursions and activities. He worked tirelessly to keep his body moving, fighting bravely for every inch. We are grateful for the many services in place to support him throughout his illness: physicians, specialists, nurses, aides, occupational and physical therapists, home care, CPAS, paramedics, Long Term Care at Cozy Nest, staff at all three Saskatoon hospitals and finally the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's. Satindar was blessed to have the spiritual care of Fr. Gerard Dewan as he navigated his last days.
Satindar loved relentlessly and unconditionally, taking great pride in the achievements of his family. His life was dedicated to their care and success. He happily integrated himself into Charlene's family upon their marriage in 2007. He referred to every Sunday supper with them as "a party." His gentle, loving presence is deeply missed.
A memorial service for Satindar will be held Saturday, December 20, 2025 at 2 pm at Edwards Family Centre, 334 - 4th Avenue North in Saskatoon. Courtesy parking is available across the street at Saskatoon Funeral Home. Those so wishing are encouraged to make memorial donations to Parkinson Canada or St. Paul's Hospital Foundation, Saskatoon, SK.
