The family of Shirley Mabel Byrnes (nee Hunt) is sad to announce her death at St. Paul's Hospital on October 3, 2023.

Shirley was born on Christmas Eve 1925 to Captain H.B. and Mabel Hunt in Gore Bay, ON.

After the death of her mother and because her father was often away for long stretches as a captain of a freighter on the Great Lakes, Shirley and her brother "Hap" moved to Vancouver, where they were raised by their paternal grandmother.

Shirley enjoyed biking, playing tennis, Girl Guides, going to the movies with her grandmother and swimming in English Bay. She made life-long friends at school. Shirley took one year at UBC, then joined the army in 1945.

After being de-mobilized, Shirley started work at H.R. MacMillan Exports, where she met Lorin Byrnes. They were married on July 8, 1950, and moves to Winnipeg then Saskatoon followed.

She was a life member of the Girl Guides and a faithful member of the Anglican Church.

Shirley enjoyed square dancing, knitting, reading, travelling and camping, especially at the Waskesiu Narrows. Shirley set an example for her family of independence, the importance of education, commitment to health and fitness and a practical, no-nonsense approach to life.

Predeceased by her parents, brother and husband Lorin, Shirley is survived by her four daughters Colleen (Dick) Kennedy, Heather (Jack) Piett, Judi (Mike) Gay and Jean (Lyle) Korinetz, 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
