The family of Shirley Olson are deeply saddened to announce her passing on February 25, 2026.
Shirley was born on September 28, 1935, in Whitewood, Saskatchewan, the youngest of three daughters born to Rose and John Zimmer. She was raised and went to school in Whitewood.
On October 28, 1961, Shirley married Don Olson. Due to Don’s work with CPR, they moved frequently throughout the early years of their marriage. While living in Gimli, Manitoba, their only child, Shelley, was born. By the time Shelley was three, the family had moved to Lauder and Alexander before settling in Bredenbury, where they lived for six years. They later relocated to Yorkton and continued moving after Shelley left home to attend university. Wherever they lived, Shirley and Don formed lasting friendships, and Shirley worked as a bookkeeper for various companies along the way.
Sadly, Don passed away in December 1989 after a lengthy illness. Shirley later moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her mother and her sister, Natalia. She lived there for twenty years before relocating to Saskatoon when she began to need additional support, remaining there until her passing.
Shirley loved watching curling and was an avid Blue Jays fan. If she didn’t care for a particular curler, you could be sure she would let you know. She had a wicked sense of humour, and a quick wit that those around her appreciated.
Many cherished Sundays were spent at Don’s sister’s family farm near Esterhazy while they were living in Bredenbury and Yorkton. Christmas was often celebrated in Winnipeg with her mother, her sister Natalia and her husband Guy, as well as Don’s sister Charlotte and her family. Those gatherings were joyful occasions, filled with laughter and Shirley’s love of singing Christmas carols.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Shelley Woloshyn; her grandson, Mitchell Woloshyn; her granddaughter, Nicole (Adam) Olexson; and her great-grandchildren, Grace and Maxwell. She is also survived by her sister, Natalia Jubinville; her nephew, Dale (Gina) LaCroix; and their son, David (Katy).
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Don; her parents, Rose and John; her sister, Jeannette LaCroix; her brother-in-law, Dave LaCroix; and her brother-in-law, Guy Jubinville.
A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home on Monday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m.
