Shirley Wenzel

May 29, 1931 — January 21, 2026

Shirley Margaret Wenzel (nee Lang) passed away January 21, 2026 at the age of 94, surrounded by her family. Left to cherish her memory forever are her three children: Kathy (Curt) Haugrud; David; and Lynda (Wes) Guenther; her grandchildren Kirstyn (Andrew), Jeff, Rachelle (Aubrey), Sheri, Derek (Trona), Cody, Brendan, Angel, Meeca (David), Emma; and her beloved 12 great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy.

Mom was predeceased in 2019 by her “love and her life”, our dad Gerry, her parents Alice and Reginald Lang, and younger brother Barry.

Shirley was born in Saskatoon and attended Victoria School, Sisters of Sion Convent Academy, Nutana Collegiate, followed by Normal School. Upon graduation, she taught all grades in a one-room school in Hanley, Saskatchewan before marrying Gerry in 1953. She finished her teaching career at Buena Vista School in Saskatoon, teaching grade 1 before she and Dad started their family.

Shirley was a life-long learner and a born teacher. Mom and Dad shared many interests together; they were involved with the YMCA, Saskatoon Aquarium Society, coached gymnastics with the St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s and Bethel Gym Clubs. She was the National Head Judge for Canadian Women’s Gymnastics in the 1960’s. She and Dad loved going fishing - Dad enjoying the fishing part and Mom enjoying simply being anywhere Dad was. She loved to garden and harvest the bounty - her pies were the absolute best, whether apple or Saskatoon berry. Her greatest passion was her family and the greatest gift she gave us was her unconditional love.

Shirley's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Ann's Senior Citizen's Village and Lynn Kimmie for their loving care.
