Velma McKnight

February 8, 1934 — November 25, 2025

Mom was born on February 8th, 1934 at home on her grandparents farm near Delisle, SK. She grew up with many extended family and shared a lot of happy memories from that time. Mom took a secretarial course following completing her Grade 12. She then went on to be employed by Senator Asseltine in Rosetown. She was extremely proud of this job and reminisced about it often.

She met Dad on a blind date and their first date was when they went to a dance together, after a short courtship they were married in 1955 and in her words "we lived happily ever after most of the time."

Following their marriage Mom and Dad settled in Meath Park where Dad had accepted a job at McCabe Grain Growers Elevator. They made the move to the farm north of Meath Park in 1967 where they lived for many years.

During that time Mom worked alongside Dad raising cattle and doing all of the hard work that raising a family required. She was never still, from baking all of our bread to cooking meals doing laundry for 7 people with an old fashioned wringer washer and just generally working hard.

Mom developed a strength which she would laughingly pointed out "did not come from a gym". Over the years mom also worked for home care in Prince Albert as well as volunteering with the residents of Herb Bassett home, where she made many great and enduring friendships.

Despite many health challenges over the years Mom showed the same resilience that was demonstrated throughout her life and continued to be there for all of us whenever we needed her. She was respected and loved and had many lifelong friendships.

Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Ernest McKnight (Bill), her daughter Debra

Johnston, as well as 2 grandchildren Charlene and Mike.

She is survived by her 4 children Roy (Patty), Tom, David (Doris) and Donna (Doug Lucyshyn) as well as so many grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren that she loved adored and talked about endlessly.

Mom was provided excellent care over the years by the staff at Columbia Manor and by the amazing staff at Prairie Spring Care home where she was loved and cared for.

Mom spent her last days surrounded by her family at St. Paul's palliative care, we cannot thank the staff enough for helping mom to feel safe and cared for in her final days.

Mom had 91 pretty amazing years and she will be missed. Instead of flowers we hope you will take the time to call or visit an elder who has meaning in your life.
