Vera (Trotzuk) Wourms was born on a wintery 16th of April in 1936 on her farm near St. Walburg, Saskatchewan. In true dramatic style, she arrived before the midwife did! Mom was extremely close with her Russian grandparents, who also lived on the farm, and they figured large in her life, even though her Baba was barely over 4ft tall.

Married in 1954 at the age of 18 to Herbert Wourms, they started their family of five two years later. After a brief stay in North Battleford, mom and dad moved to Saskatoon, raising their family surrounded by many friends and relatives. Mom always had the largest vegetable garden, and the most colourful flower gardens in the neighbourhood!

In 1973, mom had an idea and a move to Marengo, Saskatchewan was the result. With the purchase of a general store, mom lived out her entrepreneurial dream. Having worked at a similar store in Paradise Hill, she never forgot the sense of community it gave her. Even after a fire nearly destroyed the store, she persevered and rebuilt. Many a weekend night in Marengo would see the kitchen table pushed aside as mom and dad held an old-time Saturday Night Dance Party, with country and western classics ringing through the house. Mom always loved music and dancing.

Once she retired, mom worked in retail in Kindersley, learning the health food trade, and being a reliable source of information for the customers - and her family, whether we wanted the advice or not!

Mom and dad were married for 66 years prior to dad's death in 2020. As a couple, they spent many happy hours at their cabin at Aquadeo Beach on Jackfish Lake, mom with her paintings and hummingbirds, and dad with his fix-up projects. They especially loved it when the grandkids would visit, and the house was lively with squeals and laughter.

In the year 2000, mom began a prolific period of expression with her art and shared her passion for painting with a wide variety of prairie, mountain and flower scenes. She could also crochet for hours on end and was proud of crocheting over 145 toques for the Syrian and Ukrainian refugees.

Mom always loved animals and spent countless hours on the farm chasing kittens, baby rabbits and birds. Later in her lifetime, her two favourite pets were her precious Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cleo, and her feisty little Shih Tzu, Queen Sheba.

Mom loved sports, having played softball in her youth. She enjoyed watching hockey (before it got too rough), curling, and in recent years, started watching the NFL. However, her heart remained with her beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Mom was always very proud of her grandchildren; Karrie Peters (Kugler), Roxanne Wourms and Samantha Wourms (King), Jesse Symyrozum, Jameson Mossman, Garret and Brianne Macnab, Hyacinth Wourms, and Emilie Gallagher. When the great-grandchildren came along, she was even more thrilled; Aidan and Charlotte Mossman, Astrid and Theo King, and Slayden Symyrozum. Mom also gifted her famous toques to Karrie's children, Aleena and Kayden Kugler.

Vera and Herb's daughters, Patricia and Beverly, would like to send a heartfelt note of thanks to our cousins Laurie Podiluk-Milnes and Margot Podiluk for their overwhelming support of mom these past few years. Special appreciation to John and Prue Hritzuk, and Eugene Hritzuk, for the many visits, gifts of food and drives to the doctor. We could not have done this without you.

Rest well, mom. You deserve to be at peace.

Take me home, country roads, to the place I belong..." John Denver
