Wei Xi Guan

1959 — March 9, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wei Xi Guan on March 9, 2024, peacefully surrounded by family.

Wei was born November 2, 1959 in Hoiping, China. There, he lived, attended school and worked with his mother, father and 7 siblings. Wei was the first of his family to immigrate to Canada in June of 1985, where he would marry the love of his life, Mei Kwan. After their marriage, the couple helped sponsor his entire family to immigrate to Saskatoon as well.

Mei and Wei worked very hard to build a foundation and opened their first restaurant called Yummy Yummy. They welcomed their first-born son Peter, and daughter Kayla while living and working in the restaurant in Riversdale.

Wei was most well-known as an amazing chef. With a passion for cooking, he has traveled around Canada, helping others fulfill their dreams of opening a restaurant as well. After working on the road and enjoying road trips, Wei decided it was time to settle at home for good.

He successfully pursued his dream of opening something bigger in 2000, when he and his wife opened their second restaurant, Saskatoon Garden for 10 years. Wei was diagnosed with an illness that would require a bone marrow transplant in Seattle, Washington. He recovered and returned home in good health after one year of living in the United States with the tremendous help and support of his wife. During this time, they decided to travel and experience different cuisines around the world. Years later, he helped his son, Peter open another restaurant called Asian Hut. Wei continued to learn new skills and ways of cooking, making many long-time customers and friends.

Wei was extremely head strong with a courageous fighting spirit. He has fought long and hard with bravery until the very end. He is survived by his mother Mei Li, wife Meilene Guan, son Peter and daughter Kayla (Austin) along with his 7 siblings and grandson Otis.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home. Please arrive earlier to be seated. Flowers can be arranged and sent directly to the Saskatoon Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow with lunch at Smiley’s Buffet from 1-3pm.
